Malva was 95 years old. She was a transvestite who outlived three times over the average life expectancy of a trans person. She told us everything about her life during a year and a half. Together with Marlene Wayar, a Trans referent, we tried to unveil the mystery, analyzing her avant-garde militant activity and the impact she made in our lives.
Malva tiene 95 años, y es una travesti que supera en tres la vida promedio trans. Quizás un minotauro dentro de la caja de Pandora. durante un año y medio nos contó su vida ante la cámara. Junto con la referente Trans Marlene Wayar, tratamos de develar el misterio, analizando su actividad militante de vanguardia y la conmoción que causó en nuestras vidas.
– Synopsis / Sinopsis:
Malva lives in a nursing home in the province of Buenos Aires and has the ailments of old age that begin to bother her. She keeps her house in Villa Urquiza, where she goes on weekends, and where she has proof of her life, like crossing the border from Chile to Argentina on foot, leaving her roots behind, creating other worlds. Who is that grandmother: a cook, a writer, a costumer? Malva was 95 years old. She was a transvestite who outlived three times over the average life expectancy of a trans person. Almost a century in the life of someone different in a time when differences were an abyss of marginality… Perhaps a Minotaur inside a Pandora’s box. Malva died a week before we started shooting the film we had dreamt about. But, she told us everything about her life during a year and a half. Together with Marlene Wayar, a Trans referent, we tried to unveil the mystery, analyzing her avant-garde militant activity and the impact she made in our lives.
Malva vive en un Hogar de ancianos en la provincia de Buenos Aires y, tiene los achaques de una vejez que comienza a estorbarle. Conserva su casa en Villa Urquiza, a la que va los fines de semana, donde tiene pruebas de su vida, como el cruce a pie desde su Chile natal, abandonando sus raíces, creando otros mundos. ¿Quién, quien es esa abuelita: Cocinera, Escritora, Vestuarista. Malva tiene 95 años, y es una travesti que supera en tres la vida promedio trans. Casi un siglo de la vida cuando las diferencias eran abismos de marginalidad. Quizás un minotauro dentro de la caja de Pandora. Malva falleció una semana antes de comenzar con la película que soñábamos, pero durante un año y medio nos contó su vida ante la cámara. Junto con la referente Trans Marlene Wayar, tratamos de develar el misterio, analizando su actividad militante de vanguardia y la conmoción que causó en nuestras vidas.
– Director´s Biography / Biografía del Director:
CARINA SAMA
She studied Industrial Design at UNCuyo and Film Studies at Cuyo Regional College of Film and Video. During the 90’s she was part of the visual arts group «Minas de Arte», which staged various exhibitions in Mendoza and Buenos Aires. She started working in the film industry as a director assistant to many well-known directors, such as Mignona, Subiela, Aristarain. Her first documentary film «Madam Baterflai» was screened in film festivals, and has been granted many awards. Nowadays, she is working on a new documentary film «La Paloma» (in development) which constitutes a triptych on the Trans subject. She has a Master’s Degree in Documentary Journalism at UnTref, and the postgraduate course «Diverse Universe. Body, Gender, Sexuality, and Society from an Inclusive and Community Perspective,» given by the Program Area Department of Ramos Mejía Hospital.
Estudió Diseño Industrial en UNCuyo; y Cine en la Escuela Regional De Cine y Video de Cuyo. Durante los ´90 forma parte del grupo de Artes Visuales “Minas de Arte” y realiza numerosas muestras en Mendoza y Buenos Aires. Al mismo tiempo comienza su trabajo en cine participando de la realización de numerosas publicidades y de más de 40 largometrajes y series nacionales y extranjeras. Su primer documnetal “Madam Baterflai” (2013) participó de Festivales de Cine y ganó numerosos premios y menciones especiales. ¨La Paloma¨ (en desarrollo), terminaría de conforman la trilogía documental de temática Trans. Carina tiene una Maestría en Periodismo Documental cursada en la UNTreF, y es parte de grupos de investigación de la misma además de conformar la Red de estudios de género.
– Director Statement:
The starting point was the matter of femininity. Is it a condition given by the genitalia or is it a construction? Why can’t we let the other BE if he/she does not hurt us? Who has the only truth? Why can’t we open up and learn? Hiding the obvious has never been good. CON NOMBRE DE FLOR was born out of the joy of finding a 95-year-old transvestite when the average age of a transvestite is 35 years old. She herself could tell us her invisible life story.
El punto de partida fue el cuestionamiento de la feminidad. ¿Es una condición dada por los genitales o es una construcción? ¿Por qué no podemos dejar que el otro SEA si no nos daña? ¿Quién tiene la verdad? Ocultar lo obvio nunca ha sido bueno. CON NOMBRE DE FLOR nace de la alegría de encontrar una travesti de 95 años de edad cuando la edad promedio de una travesti es de 35 años. Ella misma podría contarnos una parte de la historia invisibilizada.
