- Short Synopsis / Sinopsis Corta:
John and Claudia are two policemen who spent the night together. They patrol Bogotá dealing with their feelings for each other and the personal dissatisfaction they feel. Violeta calls an old boyfriend and asks him out. She discovers that he still sells weed to pay for her mother’s medical treatment. Dissatisfaction is everywhere.
John y Claudia son dos policías que pasaron la noche juntos. Patrullan Bogotá lidiando con sus sentimientos por el otro y con la insatisfacción personal que siente. Violeta llama a un viejo novio y lo invita a salir. Ella descubre que él todavía vende marihuana para pagar el tratamiento médico de su madre. La insatisfacción está por todas partes.
- Synopsis / Sinopsis:
John and Claudia are two policemen who spent the night together. During one afternoon they patrol Bogotá, dealing with their feelings for each other and the personal dissatisfaction they feel. Violeta calls an old boyfriend and asks him out. They spend the afternoon and she discovers that he still sells weed to pay for her mother’s medical treatment. Dissatisfaction is everywhere.
John y Claudia son dos policías que pasaron la noche juntos. Durante una tarde patrullan Bogotá, lidiando con sus sentimientos por el otro y con la insatisfacción personal que siente. Violeta llama a un viejo novio y lo invita a salir. Pasan la tarde y ella descubre que él todavía vende marihuana para pagar el tratamiento médico de su madre. La insatisfacción está por todas partes.
- Director´s Biography / Biografía del Director:
VICENTE GONZÁLEZ MONROY
Colombiano/Español
Colombian writer and filmmaker. Graduated in Film and TV from NY University. In 2020 he premieres his graduation thesis shot in Havana, CLOSE YOUR EYES, in 59FICCI. In 2023 he finished BINOMIALS, produced with support from Bogotá Institute for the Arts (IDARTES), and premiered at 62FICCI. He has directed music videos, live sessions, and short films in New York, Havana, Mexico City, and Bogotá. He is currently in pre-production for his short film LEAKS and writing his first feature film.
Realizador y escritor colombiano. Graduado en Cine y TV en NY University. En 2020 estrena su tesis universitaria CIERRA LOS OJOS, en 59FICCI. En 2023 finaliza su cortometraje BINOMIOS, con apoyo del Instituto Distrital de Artes de Bogotá y estrena en 62FICCI. Dirigió videos musicales y cortometrajes en NY, La Habana, Cd de México y Bogotá. Actualmente está en pre producción de su cortometraje GOTERAS y en el desarrollo de su primer largometraje.
- Director’s Statement / Declaraciones de los Directores:
“Binomios” emerged at a time in my life when I returned to Bogotá after many years of living abroad. What made me want to return was a desire to reconnect with my country and my city, with the conviction that only there would I be able to get in touch with what was most important to me as a filmmaker. Upon my arrival in Bogotá, I felt a disappointing disconnection with the city and the people who had been my friends when I last lived there. This disappointment also manifested itself in a city that was more segregated and fractured than I had remembered it. People were living very far apart from one another even when they were physically occupying the same space, distrust and dissatisfaction seemed to be the greatest point in common for the inhabitants of Bogotá. As a result of this feeling I started writing “Binomios”. A story with a very personal and somewhat autobiographical side to it, which at a certain point didn’t seem to be enough. At the same time, I felt I needed to dive within myself and go beyond myself and my experience, which is why the other side of the story came to being. In the end, “Binomios” ended up being an exercise in bringing worlds together, an antidote to the extreme separation that I witnessed when I returned to the city that is my home.
BINOMIOS surge de cuando regresé a Bogotá después de muchos años viviendo por fuera. Lo que me hizo volver fue el deseo de reconectar con mi país y mi ciudad y la convicción de que solo allí podría entrar en contacto con lo que era más importante para mí como cineasta. Al llegar a Bogotá sentí una decepcionante desconexión con la ciudad y con las personas que solían ser mis amigos. Esta decepción también se reflejaba en una ciudad más segregada y fracturada de lo que yo la recordaba. La gente vivía muy lejos la una de la otra incluso ocupando el mismo espacio físico, la desconfianza y la insatisfacción eran el gran punto en común de todos los bogotanos. Con este sentimiento empecé a escribir BINOMIOS. Era una historia personal y algo autobiográfica, pero en algún punto sentí que eso no era suficiente. Además del deseo de adentrarme también tenía otro deseo simultáneo de ir hacia afuera, explorar lo que me era lejano. Y así surgió la otra parte del cortometraje. Finalmente terminó siendo un ejercicio de juntar mundos, un antídoto a la separación extrema que percibí cuando volví a mi ciudad.
