Sarna

“Sarna” reflects on the human condition in a non-human environment. A story of howls, barks and desolate glances in the outskirts of the Pan American Highway where most of its inhabitants are stray dogs that roam erratically through the gray and melancholic streets. Our look will be that of a person in the land of dogs with scabies; it will be the vision of a foreigner in the territory of dogs that rummage their bodies – scratching alienated – lying on the asphalt while they look for sunlight.

  • Short Synopsis / Sinopsis Corta:

A story of howls, barks and desolate stares on the outskirts of the Pan-American Highway where most of its inhabitants are stray dogs that wander erratically through the gray and melancholic streets. A girl’s voice is reproduced through an old recording tape; she tells us stories as if brought from the past. The cut melody of her soft voice blends with the harshness and sordidness of the landscape, immersing us in an intimate and introspective musing.

Sarna is a short documentary film that reflects on the human condition, in a non-human environment. A story of howls barks and desolated glances in the city of Guatemala and its neighboring municipalities, where most of its inhabitants are stray dogs that roam erratically through the grey and melancholic streets. We will follow the point of view of a person grounded in a land of dogs with scabies; it will be the vision of a foreigner in the territory of dogs that rummage through their bodies -scratching, alienated, their burning mites- lying on the asphalt while looking for the sunlight, or maybe, without knowing, a bit of human warmth. Humans seem to be the guests in this city where dogs are their own owners and live wildly in packs or as lonely wanderers. We accompany them in the early mornings of insatiable hunger around the dumps, in the crowded shelters built with wooden boxes and chains, in the improvised operating rooms where their future offspring vanish from existence, until the end, on the warm asphalt that collects their intestines. A girl’s voice is played through an old recording tape; she tells us stories that seem like a past life; tales like the one of Arafat, a dog that nobody loved but lived more than 19 years; or Serpico, and a purebred dog that slew a whole litter of cats. The melody between her soft voice melts with the roughness and sordidness of the landscape, submerging us in an intimate and introspective reckoning that will make us think after the film has finished. The contrast between the world in our heads and the one that surrounds us is accentuated as we enter into the perspective of these animals abandoned by a distant society. It approaches us and pulls us closer to be able to see sharply, the relationship we share with them and the impact it causes on us.
