- Short Synopsis / Sinopsis Corta:
La Hondura is a forgotten hamlet where La Mona, a paramilitary woman, imposes order. However, she is unable to control the nature of her body and menstruation makes her bend to the point of throwing her into bed. Despite her sullen character, her femininity emerges, revealing the sensitivity that also inhabits her.
La Hondura es un caserío olvidado, en el que La Mona, una paramilitar, impone el orden. Sin embargo, no puede dominar la naturaleza de su cuerpo y la menstruación la doblega hasta tirarla a la cama. A pesar de su carácter huraño, su feminidad aflora, revelando la sensibilidad que también la habita.
- Synopsis / Sinopsis:
Among the dust and the heat is La Hondura, a forgotten village, where tension feels like electricity in the air. There La Mona, a paramilitary, imposes order. However, she cannot dominate the nature of her body and menstruation bends her to the point of throwing her into bed. Her repressed sexual desire and the motherhood that she does not exercise, betray her authority. Her sullen character is a trench, but her femininity emerges, revealing the sensitivity that also inhabits her.
Entre el polvo y el bochorno está La Hondura. Un caserío olvidado, donde la tensión se siente como electricidad en el aire. Allí La Mona, una paramilitar, impone el orden. Sin embargo, no puede dominar la naturaleza de su cuerpo y la menstruación la doblega hasta tirarla a la cama. Su deseo sexual reprimido y la maternidad que no ejerce, traicionan su autoridad. Su carácter huraño es de trinchera, pero su feminidad aflora, revelando la sensibilidad que también la habitat.

LAURA GUTIÉRREZ ARDILA
Laura Gutiérrez Ardila is a journalist, political scientist, and Master in Audiovisual Studies and Creation (Magna Cumme Laude). She is a European Union Fellow in Cultural Studies at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. She works as a researcher and university lecturer. In 2019 she was an actress in the film LA ROYA. LA MONA is her first short film.
Laura Gutiérrez Ardila es periodista, politóloga y Magíster en Estudios y Creación Audiovisual (Magna Cumme Laude). Becaria de la Unión Europea en Estudios Culturales de la Universidad de Groningen, Países Bajos. Trabaja como investigadora y docente universitaria. En el 2019 fue actriz en la película LA ROYA. LA MONA, es su primer cortometraje.
- Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:
With this story I approach two silent issues: first, the women who co-opted hegemonic spaces of masculinity in the conflict, exercising control and territorial power and pursuing individual claims. And second, menstruation. A matter as natural as it is hidden, which encloses in its scarce representation, the repression of female sexuality and the stigmatization of our body. LA MONA is a paramilitary that claims authority in a village forgotten by the State. And she is menstruating. Her body is the bastion of her strength and evidence of her torn motherhood, her truncated sexuality, of her stark intimacy. I want to free this short film from the dismal dichotomy of good guys and bad guys, and I want to do it through the use of the Western, a hyper-masculine and colonial genre. The story of LA MONA does not revolve around the conquest of an immense territory but is articulated around the tensions of intimate spaces and the contradictions of a woman who exercises a role of power.
Con esta historia me acerco a dos asuntos silenciados: primero a las mujeres que cooptaron espacios hegemónicos de la masculinidad en el conflicto, ejerciendo control y poder territorial y consiguiendo reivindicaciones individuales. Y segundo, la menstruación. Un asunto tan natural como oculto, que encierra en su escasa representación, la represión de la sexualidad femenina y la estigmatización de nuestro cuerpo. LA MONA, es entonces, una paramilitar que reclama autoridad en un caserío olvidado por el Estado. Y que está menstruando. Su cuerpo es bastión de su fuerza y evidencia a la vez, su maternidad desgarrada, de su sexualidad trunca, de su descarnada intimidad. Deseo liberar a este cortometraje de la dicotomía funesta de los buenos y malos y quiero hacerlo a partir del uso del wéstern, un género híper-masculino y marcadamente colonial. La historia de LA MONA no gira en torno a la conquista de un inmenso territorio, sino que se articula sobre las tensiones de los espacios íntimos y las contradicciones de una mujer que ejerce un rol de poder.
