A photographer works with different images of his territory and wonders about the landscapes and relationships between the Patagonian steppe’s people, institutions, and wildlife.
Un fotógrafo trabaja con distintas imágenes de su territorio, y se pregunta por los paisajes y las relaciones entre personas, instituciones y animales salvajes de la estepa patagónica.
- Short Synopsis / Sinopsis Corta:
Desert derives from the prefix De: separation and the verb Serere: to interweave or link. I collect images to understand where I come from, the Patagonian steppe on the outskirts of Comodoro Rivadavia. A journey through this place confronts me with a web of relationships that are not visible to the naked eye. It is easier to tell about a desert with a CGI image than with a photo, and it is easier to tell about the desert with a photographic print than with a direct experience. Trail cameras allow me to see something that would be impossible on my own.
Desierto deriva del prefijo De: separación, y el verbo Serere: entretejer o enlazar. Camino y recopilo imágenes para comprender el lugar del que vengo, la estepa patagónica en las afueras de Comodoro Rivadavia. Un recorrido por este lugar me enfrenta a una trama de relaciones que no se ven a simple vista. Es más fácil contar un desierto con un render que con una imagen fotográfica, y es más fácil dar cuenta del desierto con una imagen fotográfica que con una experiencia directa. Las cámaras trampa que instalo me permiten ver algo que sería imposible por mis propios medios.
- Director´s Biography / Biografía del Director:
FRANCISCO PROVEDO
He is interested in environmental issues, «nature» and the built environment. He attended the Centro de la Imagen (CDMexico). In architecture, he specializes in 3D communication, and he has been studying ecological architecture and Natural Heritage Interpreter (EAN-Aves Argentinas). He is a freelancer, specializing in real and virtual photography of architecture, and directs Vibe, a 3D architecture visualization studio.
Se interesa por temas de medio ambiente, “naturaleza” y entorno construido. Realizó el Seminario de producción fotográfica del Centro de la Imagen (México). En arquitectura se especializó en imagen y comunicación 3d, y realiza formación sobre arquitectura ecológica e Intérprete de Patrimonio Natural (EAN-Aves Argentinas). Trabaja en forma independiente, se especializa en fotografía real y virtual de arquitectura y dirige Vibe, estudio de visualización 3d de arquitectura.
- Director’s Statement Declaraciones del Director:
This short film with documentary and essay features, which takes narrative, aesthetic, and political risks, gathers images constructed at different times and in very different formats, such as old photographs, photographs of fossils, illustrations, satellite images, renderings or the rarely seen images generated by camera traps, together with a voice-over that reflects on them in first person, to approach the Patagonian steppe from different angles and trying to establish links: as an inhospitable natural environment, discursively uninhabited, as an unfathomable, unpredictable space, which becomes a territory when one wants to conquer it and at the same time turn it into a symbol of that conquest, when it is named as a landscape and geography is imposed on it that seeks to translate it but fails. Links entail power relations and the desert cannot be approached either by trying to «look with all possible eyes» or by constructing images to synthesize it.
Este corto de rasgos documentales y de ensayo, que toma riesgos narrativos, estéticos y políticos, reúne imágenes construidas en diferentes épocas y de formatos muy diversos, como fotografías antiguas, fotografías de fósiles, ilustraciones, imágenes satelitales, imágenes de renders o las raramente vistas generadas por cámaras trampa, junto a una voz off que reflexiona en primera persona sobre las mismas, para abordar la estepa patagónica desde diversos ángulos e intentando establecer vínculos: como ambiente natural inhóspito, discursivamente deshabitado, como espacio inabarcable, impredecible, que se convierte en territorio cuando se lo quiere conquistar y a su vez convertirlo en símbolo de esa conquista, cuando se lo nombra como paisaje y se le impone una geografía que busca traducirlo pero falla. Los vínculos conllevan relaciones de poder y el desierto no puede abordarse ni intentando “mirar con todos los ojos posibles” ni construyendo imágenes para sintetizarlo.
