A fall into a void can be physical and emotional. This experimental video explores the feeling of vertigo and imbalance through traumatic experiences.
Una caída al vacío puede ser física y emocional. Este video experimental explora la sensación de vértigo y desequilibrio a través de experiencias traumáticas.
- Synopsis / Sinopsis:
A man jumps into the void from outer space and breaks the sound barrier. On another timeline, a woman takes a plane and her eardrums are punctured by the altitude, creating a physical and emotional imbalance. The free fall of both coexists in a parallel world crossed by tension.
Un hombre se tira al vacío desde el espacio y rompe con la barrera del sonido. En otra línea temporal una mujer toma un avión y sus tímpanos se perforan a causa de la altura. Esto le provoca un desequilibrio físico y emocional. La caída libre de ambos conviven en un mundo paralelo atravesado por la tensión.
- Director´s Biography / Biografía del Director:
PALOMA NAVARRO NICOLETTI
Se recibió como Lic. en Comunicación Audiovisual en la UNSAM. Continuó su formación en Madrid donde realizó el Master LAV, creación en cine contemporáneo. Es directora del Festival de Cine Bendita Tú y realizó el Programa de Cine de la Universidad Torcuato Di Tella. Fue Editora en VICE MEDIA y productora y guionista en SONORO Media, actualmente es periodista y productora freelance.
She graduated in Audiovisual Communication from the University of San Martín, Buenos Aires. She received a Master’s degree in film in Madrid and completed her studies with the film program at Don Torcuato Di Tella. She is the director of the Bendita Tú Film Festival. She has worked as a podcast producer at SONORO MEDIA, and an editor at VICE MEDIA. She is currently a freelance journalist and producer.
- Director’s Statement Declaraciones del Director:
I have always been interested in movies focusing on a specific subject to narrate a story. Nosedive is a film about hearing. During a flight to Berlin, I suffered an eardrum rupture due to the pressurized air. At that moment I experienced an unbearable buzzing sound that I have tried to recreate throughout the movie, so I can place the audience in the same situation I was. I experienced a loss of balance for many days. A continuous feeling of unsteadiness throughout my body. This incident made me think about Felix Baumgartner, a skydiver who on the same day but many years ago jumped from outer space intending to break the sound barrier. To show this temporary connection, I created a parallelism using video files from the skydiver along with some analog images I saved as part of my experience. Sometimes a free fall can be literal or abstract, a feeling resulting from a traumatic experience, to “Fall onto something” as a popular saying or slang means to understand what just happened. Finally, I meditate on the amount of time a physical or emotional free fall can take.
Siempre me interesaron las películas que profundizan en un recurso para articular el relato. Caída al vacío es una pieza donde el protagonista es el sonido. Durante un vuelo a Berlín, sufrí la ruptura de mis tímpanos debido a la presión del aire. En ese momento apareció un zumbido insoportable que intento recrear a lo largo de la película, y así colocar al espectador en el lugar en el que estuve. Viví la pérdida del equilibrio durante días enteros. Mi cuerpo tenía una sensación de inestabilidad permanente. Este incidente me hizo reflexionar sobre la experiencia de Félix Baumgartner, un paracaidista, quien el mismo día años atrás realizó un salto desde el espacio con la premisa de “romper con la barrera del sonido”. Para expresar esta conexión temporal, creé un paralelismo utilizando el archivo del paracaidista en video junto a fotografías analógicas propias que guardé como registro de mi experiencia. A veces una caída libre puede ser algo literal, y también una sensación abstracta de una vivencia traumática. “Caer en algo”, en la jerga popular, significa entender un suceso. Reflexiono sobre el tiempo en que alguien puede estar en caída libre físicamente y también en términos afectivos.
