A woman sets out to free herself from a troubled relationship in her past that has, in many ways, determined the course of her life. She assembles the pieces and performs a re-enactment.

Una mujer se propone liberarse de una relación turbada de su pasado que, en muchos sentidos, ha determinado el curso de su vida. Mediante una representación ella ensambla las piezas.

I could draw a line through my life, a crack. Everything changed after that. At thirteen, I lost the thing I most loved. A woman sets out to free herself from a troubled relationship in her past that has, in many ways, determined the course of her life. She assembles the pieces and performs a re-enactment.

Podría trazar una línea a través de mi vida, una grieta. Todo cambió después de eso. A los trece años, perdí lo que más amaba. Una mujer se propone liberarse de una relación turbada de su pasado que, en muchos sentidos, ha determinado el curso de su vida. Mediante una representación ella ensambla las piezas.

Maxine Swann is an American writer and filmmaker based in Buenos Aires since 2001. Author of three novels, she received a Harold D. Vursell Memorial Award from the Academy of Arts and Letters. Her stories have appeared in The Best American Short Stories, O’Henry Prize Stories, and Pushcart Prize Stories, and her nonfiction work has been optioned for film. In 2022, she attended the Torcuato di Tella University Film Program in Buenos Aires. Since 2019, she has been a Drag King Theater company member and is currently writing a book about her Drag King experience.

Maxine Swann es una escritora estadounidense radicada en Buenos Aires desde 2001. Autora de tres novelas, ha recibido un premio Harold D. Vursell Memorial de la Academia de Artes y Letras. Sus cuentos han aparecido en las antologías “The Best American Short Stories”, “O’Henry Prize Stories”, “Pushcart Prize Stories” y su obra de no ficción ha sido seleccionada para cine. En 2022, cursó el Programa de Cine de la Universidad Torcuato di Tella. Desde 2019, es miembro de una compañía de teatro drag king “Los Reyes del Amor” y actualmente escribe un libro sobre su experiencia drag king.

Director’s Statement Declaraciones del Director:

Although my libido is in cinema now, I come from literature. This particular short film, 14 poems, comes from a book that was very important to me but that I couldn’t finish. I had been writing this book for many years and already had 14 possible beginnings. To make the short film, I extracted lines from these beginnings as a script, looked for photos and video footage, and then realized I would need to film some scenes. But who would play the male protagonist? My drag king stepped up, a figure I had been working on for several years. What happened was a dizzying experience of stumbling into the heart of the matter. The short is about a love/abuse relationship. With this kind of relationship, one of the problems is that you get stuck in the same position, and your identity gets stuck there. Changing roles turned out to be a very powerful experience, which allowed me not only to rewrite the story but also step out of it in the process.

Aunque mi libido esté en el cine ahora, vengo de la literatura. Este cortometraje en particular viene de un libro trabado que era muy importante para mí pero que no llegaba a terminar. Hacía muchos años que escribía este libro y ya tenía 14 comienzos posibles. Para hacer el corto, extraje líneas de estos comienzos a modo de guión, busqué fotos y material de archivo de vídeo y luego me di cuenta de que necesitaría filmar algunas escenas. ¿Pero quién interpretaría al protagonista masculino? Apareció mi Drag King, una figura que venía trabajando hace unos años. Lo que ocurrió fue una experiencia vertiginosa de tropezar con el meollo del asunto. El cortometraje trata de una relación amor/abuso. Con este tipo de relación, una de los problemas es que unx se queda atrapadx en la misma posición, tu identidad se atasca ahí. Cambiar de roles resultó ser una experiencia muy poderosa, que me permitió no sólo reescribir la historia sino también salir de ella en el proceso.
