Miren Felder died on top of a snowy mountain after a plane crash in 1977. The director discovers secret messages from her grandmother in photographs taken by her military grandfather and offers herself as a medium in a ritual to communicate with her.
Miren Felder muere en la cima de una montaña nevada tras un accidente aéreo en 1977. La directora descubre mensajes secretos de su abuela en las fotografías tomadas por su abuelo militar y se ofrece como médium en un ritual para comunicarse con ella.
- Synopsis / Sinopsis:
An icy suspense, a blue party, invisible walls, sips of salt water, a shivering mirror, a crash in the snow, released snakes, and a ghost piano. MIREN FELDER is a film made with monochrome photographs taken by my military grandfather, the images are presented as hidden emergency codes sent by my grandmother after she died in a plane crash in 1977. I offer myself as a medium to invoke the spirit of my grandmother and communicate with her. MIREN FELDER takes the form of ritual knotting different layers of time and opens a portal to interrogate my family’s complicity with the dictatorship.
Un suspenso helado, una fiesta azul, muros invisibles, sorbos de agua salada, un espejo tembloroso, un choque en la nieve, serpientes liberadas y un piano fantasma. MIREN FELDER es una película hecha con fotografías monocromáticas tomadas por mi abuelo militar, las imágenes son mensajes de emergencia que envía mi abuela después de su muerte en un accidente aéreo en 1977. Me ofrezco como médium para invocar al espíritu de mi abuela y comunicarme con ella. MIREN FELDER toma la forma de ritual anudando diferentes capas de tiempo y abre un portal para interrogar la complicidad de mi familia con la dictadura.

MALEN OTAÑO
Malen Otaño (born 1984) comes from Neuquén, Patagonia, Argentina. She is a psychoanalyst and video artist. In 2021, she successfully completed the Di Tella Film Program. She has garnered numerous awards and grants for her work as a video artist, including recognition from the National Visual Arts Exhibition at Palais de Glace (2023), and Talents Berlinale (2022). She works particularly in processes of research and experimentation between film, performance, video installation, and writing. In 2020, she published her first book, «Twin Otter T-87.
Malen Otaño (1984) Neuquén, Patagonia Argentina. Es psicoanalista y videoartista. En el año 2021 realizó el Programa de Cine Di Tella. Recibió numerosos premios y becas como video artista, Fundación OSDE, Salón Nacional de Artes Visuales Palais de Glace (2023) y Talents Berlinale (2022). Trabaja especialmente en procesos de investigación y experimentación entre el cine, la performance, la videoinstalación y la escritura. En 2020 publicó su primer libro con Suyai Otaño “Twin Otter T-87”.
- Director’s Statement:
I learn to climb high rock walls and survival strategies to face a mountain and a family secret. In a manual, it says «It is possible to trace with seaweed a brief message in the sand, the important thing is that the color contrasts with the ground so that it can be read from the sky». I try to decipher the hidden messages my grandmother leaves in the photographs, to find the missing pieces of the story that bind us together, cordoned off like mountain climbers. That sustains us, that puts us at risk. To use my body as a vehicle to find us. To be with her on a sunny day lying on the beach. To say goodbye to her, to touch her hair and let her disappear in the waves.
Aprendo a escalar paredes altas de roca y estrategias de supervivencia para enfrentarme a una montaña y a un secreto familiar. En un manual dice “Es posible trazar con algas un breve mensaje en la arena, lo importante es que el color contraste con el suelo para que pueda leerse desde el cielo”. Intento descifrar los mensajes ocultos que deja mi abuela en las fotografías, encontrar las piezas faltantes del relato que nos une, acordonadas como las alpinistas. Que nos sostiene, que nos pone en riesgo. Usar mi cuerpo como vehículo para encontrarnos. Estar con ella un día de sol tiradas en la playa. Decirle chau, tocarle el pelo y que desaparezca en las olas.

Valentina Flynn
Nació en Rosario. Estudió Producción Audiovisual en UAI, Diplomatura en Distribución en UNVM y realizó el Programa de Cine de la Universidad Di Tella. Produjo documentales exhibidos en importantes festivales como VdR, Hot Docs, Chicago, Mar del Plata y BAFICI. Trabajó en las productoras Ojo Blindado, BKN y Oficina Burman. Actualmente trabaja en Gentil Cine y continua desarrollando proyectos propios con su productora Intemperie Cine.
