Katya, a trans sex worker, decides not to report the police violence she suffers to keep her mother from discovering her real occupation. However, the death of her best friend at the hands of the police changes her decision, completely changing her relationship with her mother.

Katya, una trabajadora sexual trans, decide no denunciar la violencia policiaca que sufre para evitar que su madre se entere de su verdadera ocupación. Sin embargo, la muerte de su mejor amiga a manos de la policía cambia su decisión, cambiando totalmente su relación con su madre.

Synopsis / Sinopsis:

After being attacked by the police, Katya, a trans sex worker, is offered the opportunity to denounce the violence she suffers on a TV report. She decides not to, despite her desire to bring about a change, to keep her mother from finding out about her real occupation. However, the sudden death of her best friend at the hands of the same police officers changes her decision and she denounces the attacks, completely changing her relationship with her mother.

Después de ser atacada por la policía; Katya, una trabajadora sexual trans, se encuentra con la oportunidad de denunciar públicamente la agresión en un reportaje televisivo. Decide no hacerlo, a pesar de sus ganas de lograr un cambio, para evitar que su madre se entere de su verdadera ocupación. Sin embargo, la repentina muerte de su mejor amiga a manos de los mismos policías cambia su decisión y finalmente denuncia las agresiones. Esto cambiará totalmente la relación con su madre.

Born in Lima, Peru, he is a Bachelor of Audiovisual Communication and a professional photographer. His work often revolves around the exploration of identity and sexuality. In 2017 his first artist book, «Coto de Caza», was published and financed by AECID. His first short film, «Juan Alberto», has been part of national and international festivals and is the winner of the 2019 National Short Film Competition of the Ministry of Culture of Peru. “Chica”, his second short film, was selected as the winner of the 2021 National Short Film Project Contest of the Ministry of Culture of Peru.

Nacido en Lima, Perú es Bachiller en Comunicación Audiovisual y fotógrafo profesional. Su trabajo suele tratar sobre la exploración de la identidad y la sexualidad. En el 2017 se publicó su primer libro de artista, «Coto de Caza», financiado por AECID. Su primer cortometraje «Juan Alberto» ha formado parte de festivales nacionales e internacionales y fue ganador del Concurso Nacional de Cortometrajes 2019 del Ministerio de Cultura del Perú. “Chica”, su segundo cortometraje, fue seleccionado como ganador del Concurso Nacional de Proyectos de Cortometrajes 2021 del Ministerio de Cultura del Perú.

Director’s Statement / Declaraciones de la Directora:

It is impossible to deny that trans women, the real ones and the ones that inhabit the universe of my short film, live in an adverse context. Poverty, violence, prostitution, and death are stereotypes in their representation in the cinema, but they are also a real part of their lives. In «Chica» I do not run away from those common places, but I try to focus on the people who inhabit them and their personal universes to achieve a more intimate, raw, and real representation. I’m not trying to create an ideal visual universe away from street corners, nightlife, and hair salons, but to use that reality as a canvas to show a woman’s personal story. What I have tried to do in this short film is to tell a story that takes place in the context of violence and discrimination that trans women experience here in Peru, but not told from their point of view as victims but as agents of change. Another important point for me is the issue of representation. There are very few professional trans actresses in Lima and it was important to me that trans characters are represented by trans women. For this reason, I decided to give, working with a professional actress, a free acting workshop for all trans women interested. After a month of workshops, I selected both actresses from there. While none of them had a lot of acting experience, it seems to me that what they could bring to the table from their own experiences had much more weight. In addition, the workshop allowed me to show them the script and see what they thought of what I had written, of the characters I had created, how they spoke, how they were represented, and what the mother-daughter relationship was like if they felt represented in what I had created. In order for there to be a correct representation, this cannot only be from my cisgender point of view, so I was interested in it being a dialogue with them.

Es imposible negar que las mujeres trans, las reales y las que habitan el universo de mi corto, viven en un contexto adverso. Pobreza, violencia, prostitución, muerte son estereotipos en su representación en el cine, sí, pero también son parte real de sus vidas. En “Chica” no huyo de esos lugares comunes, sino que me centro en las personas que los habitan y sus universos personales para lograr una representación más íntima, cruda y real. No estoy intentando crear un universo visual ideal alejado de las esquinas, la noche y las peluquerías sino usar esa realidad como lienzo para mostrar la historia personal de una mujer. Lo que he intentado hacer en este cortometraje es contar una historia que se desarrolla en el contexto de violencia y discriminación que viven aquí en el Perú las mujeres trans, pero no está contado desde el punto de vista de ellas como víctimas sino como agentes de cambio. Otro punto importante para mí es el tema de la representación. Existen muy pocas actrices trans profesionales en Lima y para mí era importante que los personajes trans sean representados por mujeres trans. Por ello opté por realizar, junto a una actriz profesional, un taller de actuación gratuito para mujeres trans interesadas en aprender actuación. Después de un mes de taller, seleccioné a ambas actrices de allí. Si bien ninguna tenía demasiada experiencia actoral, me parece que lo que podían aportar desde sus propias experiencias importaba mucho más. Además, el taller sirvió para mostrarles el guión y ver qué opinaban de lo que había escrito, de los personajes que había planteado, que pudieran dar su apreciación sobre cómo hablaban, cómo estaban representadas, cómo era la relación madre e hija, si se veían reflejadas en lo que había estaba planteado y escucharlas. Para que haya una correcta representación, esta no puede solo ser desde mi punto de vista cisgénero, sino que me interesaba que sea un diálogo con ellas.
