For fifteen years, while living in the same house, my mother, sisters and I wrote letters to each other. In this animated essay, the words from that early family routine enter into dialogue with present routines, as a way of exploring the emotional bonds between the women of my family.

For fifteen years, while living in the same house my mother, sisters and I, wrote letters to each other. In this animated essay, the words of that epistolary experience dialogue with images of today’s daily life, as a way of exploring the emotional bonds between the women of my family.

Durante quince años, viviendo en la misma casa con mi mamá y mis hermanas nos escribíamos cartas. En este ensayo animado las palabras de aquella experiencia epistolar (testimonio)  dialogan con imágenes del cotidiano actual, intervenidas para explorar los vínculos afectivos entre las mujeres de mi familia.

Animator and visual artist. She directed the short films JUAN MUTANT (2016), THE DOMAIN OF STONES (2017), and HOW TO MAKE A HOUSE (2018). She won INCAA Childhood contests and various subsidies. She was part of the Art exhibitions «16 lonely hearts» 2018, «The drawing as a house» 2018/19, and «Urban Interventions» 2018/19. Graduated from EPCTV and the School for animators. She teaches «Experimental animation».

Estefanía Clotti (Rosario, Argentina, 1985). Animadora y dibujante. Dirigió los cortometrajes  JUAN CAMBIANTE (2016), EL DOMINIO DE LAS PIEDRAS (2017) y CÓMO HACER UNA CASA (2018). Ganó concursos Infancias INCAA y subsidios varios. Formó parte de las muestras colectivas “16 corazones solitarios” 2018, “El dibujo como casa” 2018/19 e “Intervenciones Urbanas” 2018/19. Graduada de la EPCTV y de la Escuela para Animadores. Es docente de «Animación experimental».

  • Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:

It all started as a game. I would select videos that I recorded with my phone; I would print them and paint silhouettes over the real image of my grandmother, my mother, or my sisters. It was motivating to explore the contrast between those two images. The first voice-over would go along this way, describing what these people were like underneath the coat of paint. They were like exercises that, without me noticing it, began to accumulate in a timeline. The letters came afterward and started to sneak in until they completely replaced the descriptions. It seemed to me that describing with a piece of the letter was a much more open, metaphorical, and challenging game. To account for an intimate exchange without exposing my family resulted in an emotional encounter with whoever was exposed to the film, perhaps even in those animated figures, which are only left with their voices and surroundings as the last remnants of their originality. In times, those figures are nothing but stains, allow for anyone to identify themselves or others in them, turning an intimate play into a universal one. To grab these words circulated in writing in my family and recreate a new “letter” that would speak of me about them was the final trigger, without solemnity, without splendor, without efficiency, and leaving room for play and chance.

Al principio fue un juego. Seleccionaba videos que grababa con el celular, los imprimía y pintaba una figura sobre el cuerpo real de mi abuela, mi mamá o mis hermanas. Me motivaba explorar sobre el contraste de esas imágenes. La primera voz en off iba sobre esa línea, describía como eran esas personas debajo de la pintura. Me lo tomaba más bien como ejercicios que casi sin darme cuenta se estuvieron acumulando en un timeline. Las cartas llegaron después y fueron filtrándose hasta tomar la posición de esas descripciones. Describir tomando un trozo de una carta me pareció un juego más abierto, metafórico y desafiante. Dar cuenta de un intercambio íntimo, sin exponer a mi familia resulto en un encuentro sensible con quien se dispone ante el cortometraje, tal vez en esas figuras animadas, a las que solo les queda el entorno y su voz como vestigio de su originalidad, y que por momentos no son más que manchas, hace que cualquiera pueda tomar esa forma e identificarse, o identificar a otrx tornando el juego que parte de lo íntimo en un tema universal. Hacerme de esas palabras que circularon de forma escrita por mi familia y armar una nueva “carta” que hable de mí en relación a mi familia fue al final lo convocante, pero sin solemnidad, sin espectacularidad, sin eficiencia y sin dejar de darle espacio al azar y al juego.
