The role that museums play in society is more than just displaying works. A series of metaphors illustrate how the sense of touch is an innate form for accessing knowledge. The hands featured in the works exhibited at the Hermitage Museum demonstrate how art can generate ideas that encourage people to know their own limits and want to overcome them.

El papel que juegan los Museos en la sociedad actual va más allá de exponer obras. Una serie de metáforas ilustran cómo el sentido del tacto es una forma innata de acceso al conocimiento, las manos representadas en las obras del Museo Hermitage demuestran cómo el arte produce ideas que impulsan a las personas a conocer sus límites y querer superarlos.

The important role that museums play as part of contemporary society is more than just displaying a collection of works. In this film, a series of metaphors illustrate how the sense of touch is an innate form for accessing knowledge. The hands featured in the different works exhibited at the Hermitage Museum are the protagonists who demonstrate how art can generate ideas that encourage people to know their own limits and want to overcome them.

El importante papel que juegan los Museos en la sociedad contemporánea va más allá de exponer un conjunto de obras. En esta película, una serie de metáforas ilustran cómo el sentido del tacto es una forma innata de acceso al conocimiento, las manos que figuran en las diversas obras del Museo Hermitage son las protagonistas que demuestran cómo el arte permite originar ideas que impulsan a las personas a conocer sus propios límites y querer superarlos.

Director, Ph.D. student, animator, and sound designer. His short films “The scape of the 45″ (2016) and “Call Confession» (2018) have been considered in the official competition of several festivals, including Malaga, Sitges, Guadalajara, Shenzhen, and Hot-Docs where he won the award for the best international short film. «Spouses» is the last documentary feature film where he has collaborated as a post-producer.

Director, estudiante de doctorado, animador y diseñador de sonido. Sus cortometrajes “La fuga de los 45” (2016) y “Confeso” (2018) han sido considerados dentro de la competencia oficial de festivales como Málaga, Sitges, Guadalajara), Shenzhen y Hot-Docs en donde fue ganador del premio al mejor cortometraje internacional. “Conyuges” es el último largometraje documental dónde ha colaborado como postproductor.

• Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:

This Documentary-Essay comes out of a trip I made to St. Petersburg, Russia, in December 2019. I attended by invitation to a media and journalism festival to present «Call Confession» at the theatre of the Hermitage Museum. The event organizers told us that we had the opportunity to get full access and permission to film inside the museum and make a film. I decided to shoot only the hands that appeared on the paintings and sculptures in the museum because I believe that they alone convey different meanings.  The documentary is a kind of manifesto about the challenges faced by the artist when starting a new work or project. I believe that this fear of the blank canvas, or the uncertainty that is generated when facing a new beginning, is an essential part of creating knowledge. With this documentary essay, I want to make an invitation to other people to get to know and overcome the frontiers of what we are unaware of in our own experience. The documentary begins by presenting the last stage of artistic creation, the exhibition of the work, and its main objective is to explain how this stage triggers another one where everything starts again, germinating a new idea in the mind of the person who is in front of the exhibited work. Likewise, the documentary suggests the importance that the sense of touch has in artistic practice, because it is a way to produce knowledge, and practice-led research implies new paradigms where the act of research is no longer treated as something monolithic. The synthetic and narrating voice of the documentary (artificial intelligence) has two meanings, one authoritative and the other suggestive, both of which can be interpreted as the internal dialogue that takes place at the beginning of a new project. The music of the documentary is composed of two drum sets, one located on the left of the sound field, and the other on the right, together, they are intended to be a sound metaphor for the two hemispheres of the human mind.

Este Ensayo-Documental surge a partir de un viaje que hice a San Petersburgo, Rusia, en diciembre de 2019. Asistí por invitación de un festival de medios audiovisuales y periodismo para presentar “Confeso” en el teatro del Museo Hermitage. Los organizadores del evento nos comunicaron que teníamos la oportunidad para tener acceso total y permiso para grabar al interior del museo y hacer una película. Decidí fotografiar únicamente las manos que aparecían en las obras pictóricas y escultóricas del museo porque considero que por sí solas transmiten diversos significados. El documental es una especie de manifiesto sobre los desafíos a los que se enfrenta el artista cuando inicia una nueva obra o proyecto. Creo que el miedo al lienzo en blanco, la incertidumbre que se genera frente a todo nuevo comienzo es parte esencial en la generación del conocimiento. Con este ensayo documental quiero hacer una invitación a otras personas a conocer y querer trascender las propias fronteras de aquello que desconocemos en nuestra experiencia. El documental inicia presentando la última etapa de la creación artística, la exhibición de la obra, y tiene como objetivo principal explicar cómo esta etapa desencadena otra donde todo vuelve a iniciar, con el germinar de una nueva idea en la mente de la persona que está frente a la obra expuesta. Asimismo, el documental sugiere la importancia que el sentido del tacto tiene en la práctica artística, porque es una vía para producir conocimiento, donde la investigación dirigida por la práctica supone nuevos paradigmas donde el acto de investigar deja de ser tratada como algo monolítico. La voz sintética y narradora del documental ( inteligencia artificial ) tiene dos acepciones, una autoritaria y otra propositiva, ambas pueden interpretarse como el diálogo interno que sucede frente al comienzo de un nuevo proyecto. La música del documental está compuesta por dos juegos de batería, uno localizado a la izquierda del campo sonoro, y el otro a la derecha, en conjunto, pretenden ser una metáfora sonora de los dos hemisferios de la mente humana.
