“JUDGED BODIES” explores through the arrival of a journalist in El Salvador, the struggle of the feminist activist Morena Herrera and the Citizen Group for the decriminalization of abortion to free women who have been unjustly imprisoned, accused of having abortions with sentences of up to 40 jail years.

“CUERPOS JUZGADOS” explora a través de la llegada de una periodista a El Salvador, la lucha de la activista Morena Herrera y la Agrupación Ciudadana para liberar mujeres que han caído presas injustamente, acusadas de practicarse abortos, con penas de hasta 40 años de cárcel.

• Synopsis / Sinopsis:

Journalist Mariana Carbajal reveals the reality of women in El Salvador, where one of the strictest abortion prohibition laws in the world is in force. Criminalized in all its causes since 1998, the persecution and imprisonment of poor women facing an obstetric emergency are a constant. In the voice of Cinthia, Teodora, and Evelyn, victims of this network of violence, a question is intuited: What is the chances of being free when the State does not guarantee the right to life?

La periodista Mariana Carbajal revela la realidad de las mujeres de El Salvador, donde rige una de las leyes de prohibición del aborto más estrictas del mundo. Penalizado en todas sus causales desde 1998, la persecución y el encarcelamiento de las mujeres pobres que enfrentan una emergencia obstétrica es una constante. En la voz de Cinthia, Teodora y Evelyn, víctimas de este entramado de violencias, se intuye una pregunta: ¿Qué posibilidad hay de ser libres cuando el Estado no garantiza el derecho a la vida?

• Director´s Biography / Biografía del Director:

MARIANA CARBAJAL

Journalist at Pagina 12 and host of the Punto Género show. Trainer in journalism with a gender and rights perspective. For her journalistic works, she has received numerous awards and distinctions. She is the author of four books and numerous articles. In 2017 she won the Lola Mora Award for Career. She was a promoter of the Ni Una Menos movement. Cuerpos Juzgados is her first documentary film.

Periodista en Página 12 y conductora del programa Punto Género en DTV. Capacitadora en periodismo con perspectiva de género y derechos. Por sus trabajos periodísticos ha recibido numerosos premios y distinciones. Es autora de cuatro libros y numerosos artículos. En 2017 obtuvo el premio Lola Mora a la Trayectoria y en 2022 el “LASA Media Award”. Formó parte del colectivo Ni Una Menos. Cuerpos Juzgados es su primer film documental.

• Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:

Every time I re-watch Judgment Bodies, I am deeply moved by the stories of the women we interview, on one hand, those whose rights are violated by an unjust law, and on the other, that feminist plot that is being woven to get them out of jail. Without this committed and loving activism, dozens of women would continue to be imprisoned, forgotten, in the women’s prisons of El Salvador. Amplifying those voices is what motivated me to film this documentary.

Cada vez que vuelvo a ver Cuerpos Juzgados me conmueven profundamente las historias de las mujeres que entrevistamos, por una lado  aquellas cuyos derechos son vulnerados por una ley injusta, y por el otro, esa trama feminista que se va tejiendo para sacarlas de la cárcel. Sin ese activismo, comprometido y amoroso, decenas de mujeres seguirían presas, olvidadas, en las cárceles de mujeres de El Salvador. Amplificar esas voces, es lo que me motivó a filmar este documental.
