The smoke emerging from the volcano augurs a repressed but rebellious heart. Is there empathy between the volcanic eruption and the social claim?
El humo que emerge del volcán augura un corazón reprimido pero rebelde. ¿Existe una empatía entre la erupción volcánica y el hervor social?
- Synopsis / Sinopsis:
A personal diary of a period living in Mexico and a portrait of the Popocatepetl, an active volcano. During the conquest, the Mexican revolution, the rise of the EZLN, and nowadays the feminist outburst, the volcano replied with its eruptions to the social claim. ¿Can a mountain recall? The smoke emerging from the crater augurs a rebel but suffocated heart, in the line that draws in the horizon a see a scar.
El diario de un período vivido en México y un retrato del Popocatépetl, un volcán activo. Durante la conquista, la revolución mexicana, el alzamiento del EZLN y hoy el estallido feminista el volcán replicó el hervor social con sus erupciones. ¿Puede una montaña recordar? El humo que emerge del cráter augura un corazón rebelde y sofocado, en la línea que dibuja en el horizonte veo una cicatriz.

Delfina Carlota Vazquez, 1993, Mendoza, Argentina. Studied audiovisual arts in the UNA in Argentina and the BUAP in Mexico. She developed as DoP in several documentaries and video clips. Her photo book Kypros was a finalist in CDF Montevideo. Since 2018 she participates in Asolar and Proyectorazo, both artivist collectives. In 2021 she wrote and directed “Can a mountain recall”.
Delfina Carlota Vazquez, 1993, Mendoza, Argentina. Estudió cine en la UNA (Argentina) y en la BUAP (Mexico). Su foto-libro KYPROS participó como finalista en el encuentro de foto-libros de CDF Montevideo. Desde 2018 participa en los colectivos artivistas ASOLAR y PROYECTORAZO que intervienen el espacio público con proyecciones visibilizando reclamos de igualdad de género y derechos humanos. Escribió y dirigió el corto documental “Puede una montaña recordar” ganador de la competencia internacional de cortometrajes en E tudo verdade 2021.

The morning I learned that in Argentina the decriminalization of abortion had been rejected by congress I felt a deep disappointment and remoteness, I went to the window and saw the volcano, it had launched a huge fumarole, then I felt that the tension between the people and the volcano existed. At distance from my place of origin, I wondered what it is that unites us to places. I learned that this volcano reacts to the transformative events that the society that surrounds it is going through and then the Popocatepetl revealed itself to me as the suffocated heart of the people.
Cuando me enteré que en Argentina la despenalización del aborto había sido rechazada me sentí aún más lejos, me acerqué a la ventana y ví el volcán, había lanzado una enorme fumarola. Supe que este volcán reaccionó a los sucesos que pusieron en disputa el territorio que lo rodea y entonces el Popocatepetl se me develó como el corazón sofocado del pueblo. Este trabajo nace desde el desarraigo, como una forma de sensibilizar acerca de la empatía entre lxs sujetxs y la tierra que habitan.
