A group of teenage friends spend a fun afternoon at a cemetery, or so it seems.
Un grupo de amigos adolescentes decide pasar una tarde divertida en el cementerio, o eso aparenta.
– Synopsis / Sinopsis:
One afternoon, six teenage friends gather around at a cemetery. They appear to be rambling: they film each other among horseplay and crossed relationships. Talking about death, drinking mate. Chating about dreams, smoking marihuana. They compare the place with school and avoid issues. Music plays, they’re alive. The place seems familiar. They dance, carefree, in between jokes that a funeral procession interrupts only slightly. But the seemingly aimless afternoon does have a point.
Una tarde, seis amigos adolescentes se reúnen en un cementerio. Pareciera que pasean: se filman entre jugueteos y relaciones cruzadas. Hablan de la muerte, toman mate. Charlan sobre sueños, fuman marihuana. Comparan el lugar con la escuela y esquivan temas. Suena música, están vivos. El lugar les resulta familiar. Bailan despreocupados, entre chistes que un cortejo fúnebre sólo frena a medias. El recorrido aparentemente errante culmina en una tumba: “feliz cumpleaños, amigo”.
– Long Synopsis / Sinopsis Larga:
Vero is sitting on a marble staircase. She smokes slowly, while listening to music in her headphones. A male hand rests gently on Vero’s hand. It’s from Lucio, who is sitting next to her. He looks at her but she is concentrated on a far point. She just looks away every so often at her watch. They hear the approach of young voices. Vero separates their hands so that both can stand up. Some friends are approaching to them: Paula, Fede and the twins, Demian and Evelyn, who is filming with her video camera. The group greets warmly and undertake road together.
The 6 teenagers move through a path surrounded by trees. They are in a cemetery.
Evelyn films the group walking through the little streets. They laugh, and chat about little transcendent things. Demian and Fede speak about their weekend; Paula, excited, tells an anecdote about other girls to Vero, who seems distracted. Lucio intercepts them in an attempt to scare them, but ends with the girls being offended with him.
Demian is absorbed contemplating a sculpture on a grave. Fede asks him about smoking, and insinuates he meant marijuana. Evelyn films them and Demian jokes about her cinematic aspirations.
The group reunite, but then Fede and Demian say they need to go to the bathroom. Lucio bothers them about going together as girls, and Paula ensure they all know they are going to smoke marijuana.
While Demian and Fede leave towards a landscaped area, the rest of the group continues its way through the mausoleums.
Lying in the shade of a tree, Demian and Fede smoke and reflect on life and death between jokes. Meanwhile, Evelyn talks about a dream she had in which all her friends were in kindergarten. Lucio makes a “mate” and wonders about what is filming Evelyn, who don’t take the camera off of them. Lucio sees an employee of the cemetery a little away from the group and goes talk to him. While chatting, Demian and Fede get back to the girls. Lucio asks for a lost set of keys, to what the employee says he haven’t saw them and jokes that he is distracted because he’s in love. Lucio watches Vero and get lost in a imagination.
The six walk through a hall of the niche areas while explaining its structure and comparing it with school lockers. Paula notice Vero walks away from the group and tries to comfort her.
Passing between the outer graves, they laugh at some names on tombs and funeral processions compared with limousines and carnival parades. They laugh out loud while imitating a dance troupe, meanwhile Evelyn’s films. At the highest point of that excitement, a hearse passes next to the friends and they try to get serious. They keep walking, trying to hide the desire to burst into laughter back.
They reach a park area that contrasts with the general conditions of the cemetery. There’s several graves lying on neat and tidy grass. The six of them gather round in a circle around one of the tombs. They look more serious now, but they’re still full of life. They approach in turns, expressing their birthday wishes. Vero takes off the ring from her finger and leaves it on top of the tomb, whispering “I love you”. Her and Lucio hug each other with strenght. The friends look at each other in complicity, melancholic but with high hopes. They walk away from the tomb through the park; the sign on the grave reads David Paez, and it states that he passed away a few years ago. Unlike the other graves, this one is decorated colorfully, with photos, small dolls and lots of stickers.
Vero está sentada sobre unas escaleras de mármol. Fuma lentamente, escucha música sus auriculares. Una mano masculina se apoya delicadamente sobre la de Vero. Es la mano de Lucio, que está sentado junto a ella. Él la mira, busca sus ojos con la mirada, pero ella cestá concentrada en un punto fijo a lo lejos. Sólo desvía la vista cada tanto hacia su reloj. Se acercan unas voces jóvenes. Vero separa su mano de la de Lucio para pararse. Cuando se ponen de pie, se acercan Paula, Fede y los mellizos, Demián y Evelyn, que viene filmando con su cámara de video. El grupo se saluda afectuosamente y emprenden camino juntos.
Los 6 adolescentes avanzan por un camino rodeado de árboles. Están en un cementerio.
Evelyn filma al grupo adentrándose por las callecitas.. Se ríen, comentan cosas poco trascendentes. Demián y Fede hablan del fin de semana; Paula, entusiasmada, le cuenta a Vero distraída una anécdota sobre otras chicas. Lucia las intercepta en un intento de asustarlas, pero termina con las chicas ofendiéndose con él.
Demián contempla absorta una escultura sobre una tumba. Fede le pide de fumar, y le insinúa que se refería a marihuana al ver que le ofrece cigarrillos. Evelyn los filma y Demián la pelea sobre sus aspiraciones cinematográficas.
Se encuentran con el resto del grupo, pero en seguida Demián y Fede dicen que van al baño. Lucio los molesta por ir juntos como las chicas, y Paula los culpa de adictos, asegurando que todos saben que van a fumar. Con Demián y Fede yéndose hacia una zona más parquizada, el resto del grupo continúa su camino por entre los mausoleos.
Acostados a la sombra de un árbol, Demián y Fede fuman y reflexionan sobre la vida y la muerte entre chistes. Mientras tanto, Evelyn cuenta un sueño que tuvo en el que todos sus amigos estaban en el jardín de infantes. Lucio ceba mates y se cuestionan sobre aquello que está filmando Evelyn, que no les saca la cámara de encima. Lucio se aparta del grupo al ver a un empleado del cementerio barriendo. Mientras charla con él, Demián y Fede vuelven y se suman a las chicas. Lucio le pregunta por unas llaves que perdió anteriormente, a lo que el empleado responde que no las vio y bromea diciéndole que se distrajo por estar enamorado. Lucio mira a Vero y se pierde en una ensoñación.
Los seis caminan por los pasillos de las zonas de nichos, mientras explican su estructura comparándolos con los lockers del colegio. Paula nota que Vero se aparta del grupo e intenta consolarla.
Pasando por entre las tumbas exteriores, se ríen de algunos nombres en las tumbas y comparan los cortejos fúnebres con limusinas y comparsas de carnaval. Ríen a carcajadas mientras bailan imitando una comparsa y Evelyn los filma. En el punto más alto de esa excitación, un coche fúnebre pasa por al lado de los chicos e intentan ponerse serios. Siguen caminando tratando de disimular las ganas de estallar en risas de vuelta.
Llegan a una zona de parque que contrasta con el estado general del cementerio. Hay varias lápidas sobre un césped prolijo y cuidado. Los 6 se acomodan haciendo una ronda alrededor de una de las lápidas. Se han puesto más serios, pero conservan su vitalidad. Se van acercando de a uno, le desean feliz cumpleaños. Vero se agacha y apoya sobre la piedra de la lápida el anillo que saca de su dedo, susurrando “te amo”. Al dejarlo, ella y Lucio se abrazan fuerte. Los amigos se miran cómplices, melancólicos pero esperanzados. Se alejan de la tumba por el parque; en ella dice el nombre David Paez, e indica que falleció pocos años atrás. A diferencia de las demás tumbas, ésta está decorada con colores, fotos, pequeños muñecos y muchos stickers.

PAULINA DANA
Paulina Dana is a 23-year-old movie director from Buenos Aires. She is currently doing her master degree in Film Directing in Universidad del Cine, Buenos Aires. «Dear Friends» (“Para los Amigos”) is her first short film as screenwriter and director. It came out of a need of catharsis from the loss of a close friend in the Santa Fe Tragedy in 2006.
Paulina Dana es una directora de cine porteña de 23 años, estudia actualmente licenciatura en dirección cinematográfica en la Universidad del Cine de Buenos Aires. “Para los Amigos” es su primer cortometraje como guionista y directora. La historia surgió como una especie de catarsis por la pérdida de una gran amiga en la conocida Tragedia de Santa fe de 2006.
– Director Statement / Declaracines del Director:
It came out of a need of catharsis from the loss of a close friend in the Santa Fe Tragedy in 2006. The motivation for the project was to tell the story of being young and having to deal with an absence, emptiness. The idea was to work with the contrast between the place and the characters, and the prejudices aimed at young people. Finally, the intention was for every member of the audience to be able to understand the characters. The short film «Dear Friends» is dedicated to all of the friends that are “not here anymore», as well as those who remain with us.
Surgió como una especie de catarsis por la pérdida de una gran amiga en la conocida Tragedia de Santa fe de 2006.
La motivación para llevar a cabo el proyecto fue contar la historia de cómo ser joven y manejar una ausencia, un vacío. Trabajar con el contraste del lugar y los personajes, con los prejuicios hacia la juventud. Y finalmente, con la intención de que todo espectador pueda comprender a los personajes.
El cortometraje “Para los Amigos” está dedicado a todos aquellos amigos “que ya no están”, como los que continúan acompañándonos.
