The electronic eyes of their cell phones observe the three protagonists on their journey to an industrial flower farm during Germany’s first lockdown. Between selfies and ephemeral voice messages glimpses of the disillusioning destiny of a youth who migrated to Europe in search of a different future.
Con la irrupción de la pandemia, tres jóvenes migrantes dejan Berlín en busca de trabajo en una fábrica de flores en la frontera con Holanda. Entre selfies y mensajes de voz, se entrevé el destino amargo de una juventud que migró a Europa en busca de un futuro distinto.
Die elektronischen Augen ihrer Handys beobachten die Protagonist*innen auf ihrer Reise zu einer industriellen Blumenfabrik während Deutschlands erstem Lockdown. Zwischen Selfies und flüchtigen Sprachnachrichten zeichnet sich das desillusionierende Schicksal einer Jugend ab, die auf der Suche nach einer anderen Zukunft nach Europa migriert ist.
- Synopsis / Sinopsis:
With the outbreak of the pandemic in Germany, the lives of a group of young migrants are diametrically modified. Being left without work possibilities in Berlin´s first Lockdown they make their way to work at an industrial flower farm where they live together in a container. The electronic eye of their cell phones observes them moving through a new hostile work environment, crossing paths with other migrants, creating friendships, and getting lost. Between selfies and ephemeral voice messages glimpses of the disillusioning destiny of a youth who migrated to Europe in search of a different future.
Con el estallido de la pandemia en Alemania, la vida de un grupo de jóvenes inmigrantes se modifica diametralmente. Al quedarse sin posibilidades de trabajo en el primer lockdown de Berlín, se dirigen a trabajar a una granja industrial de flores donde conviven en un contenedor. El ojo electrónico de sus teléfonos móviles les observa moverse por un nuevo entorno laboral hostil, cruzándose con otros migrantes, creando amistades y perdiéndose. Entre selfies y efímeros mensajes de voz se vislumbra el destino desilusionante de una juventud que emigró a Europa en busca de un futuro diferente.
Mit dem Ausbruch der Pandemie ändert sich das Leben einer Gruppe von jungen Migrant*innen schlagartig. Ohne Arbeitsmöglichkeiten in Berlins erstem Lockdown suchen sie Arbeit in einer industriellen Blumenfabrik. Das elektronische Auge ihrer Handys beobachtet sie in ihrer neuen, feindseligen Arbeitsumgebung: wie sich ihre Wege mit anderen Migrant*innen kreuzen, sie Freundschaften schließen und sich verirren. Zwischen Selfies und flüchtigen Sprachnachrichten zeichnet sich das desillusionierende Schicksal einer Jugend ab, die auf der Suche nach einer besseren Zukunft nach Europa migriert ist.

TIN WILKE
Tin Wilke is an interdisciplinary artist, filmmaker, and activist from East Berlin who works on the intersection of digital and analog material within installations, stages, virtual reality, video art, and experimental film forms. Tin studied Art and Media at the University of the Arts Berlin and has a master’s degree in Theatre with New Media and Interactivity from University UNA Buenos Aires.
Tin Wilke es artista interdisciplinar, cineasta y activista de Berlín Oriental que trabaja en la intersección de material digital y analógico en instalaciones, escenarios, realidad virtual, videoarte y formas de cine experimental. Tin estudió Arte y Medios en la Universidad de las Artes de Berlín y tiene un máster en Teatro con Nuevos Medios e Interactividad en la Universidad UNA.
MIGUEL GOYA
Miguel Goya is an Argentine film director and editor. He has worked as an editor on many short and feature films that premiered internationally. Casa Morena (2015) was his first feature film as a director. Since 2019, he has been based in Berlin.
Miguel Goya es un cineasta y montajista argentino. Ha trabajado como editor en muchos cortos y largometrajes que se estrenaron internacionalmente. Casa Morena (2015) fue su primer largometraje como director. Desde 2019 reside en Berlín.
- Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:
Both filmmakers met in 2019 in Berlin while working on the post-production of the full-length documentary RePresente – the future is ours. As a result of that great collaborative experience, they decided to work on innovative film formats that connect relevant social topics with contemporary aesthetics. When the German Government was flying in 40000 seasonal workers from Eastern Europe across the closed borders during Lockdown and at the same time various young Argentinian migrants planned to leave Berlin in order to work on an industrial flower farm, they decided to make a film about the complex conditions of migrants in Germany. As the pandemic situation didn´t permit traveling and shooting they relied completely on the personal film and sound material from the protagonists’ cell phones, which allowed the two filmmakers to work on a very personal level on this socially relevant topic, trying out new strategies of narrating. The editing process took place in close cooperation with the protagonists, which reinforces the film’s authenticity.
Ambos cineastas se conocieron en 2019 en Berlín mientras trabajaban en la postproducción del largometraje documental RePresente – el futuro es nuestro. Como resultado de esa gran experiencia de colaboración, decidieron trabajar en formatos cinematográficos innovadores que conectan temas sociales relevantes con la estética contemporánea. Cuando el Gobierno alemán hacía pasar por las fronteras cerradas a 40.000 temporeros de Europa del Este durante el Lockdown y al mismo tiempo varios jóvenes migrantes argentinos planeaban abandonar Berlín para trabajar en una granja industrial de flores, decidieron hacer una película sobre las complejas condiciones de los migrantes en Alemania. Como la situación de la pandemia no permitía viajar y rodar, se basaron completamente en el material fílmico y sonoro personal de los teléfonos móviles de los protagonistas, lo que permitió a los dos cineastas trabajar a un nivel muy personal sobre este tema socialmente relevante, probando nuevas estrategias de narración. El proceso de montaje se realizó en estrecha colaboración con los protagonistas, lo que refuerza la autenticidad de la película.
