Daniel arrives at Buenos Aires from Cameroon to find a job and save money to send back to his family. In addition to the difficulties of working in the streets, Daniel faces a greater hardship: the abuse of power from the police. Based on true events.
Daniel, llega a Buenos Aires desde Camerún para encontrar trabajo y ahorrar dinero para enviar a su familia. Además de las dificultades de trabajar en la calle, Daniel afrontará el abuso de poder por parte de la policía. Basado en hechos reales.
– Synopsis / Sinopsis:
Ikè means voyage in Cameroons’s Mboh dialect. Based on true events, this project is the outcome of various interviews with African immigrants who have been working in Buenos Aires for years. Young Daniel arrives at Buenos Aires from Cameroon to find a job and save money to send back to his family. His friend Cedric, who already lives in the city, welcomes him and helps him find a place to stay. Daniel starts working as a street vendor, advised by Massamba, a Senegalese friend with experience in the business. Together, they also share their anecdotes and personal aspirations. In addition to the difficulties of working in the streets, Daniel faces a greater hardship: the abuse of power from the police.
Ikè significa “viaje” en el dialecto Mboh de Camerún. Basado en hechos reales, este proyecto surge de entrevistas a inmigrantes africanos que hace años trabajan en Buenos Aires. El joven camerunés Daniel llega a la ciudad para encontrar trabajo y ahorrar un dinero para enviar a su familia. Lo recibe su viejo amigo Cedric, quien lo ayuda a encontrar un lugar para vivir. El senegalés Massamba, experimentado en la venta callejera, le da consejos para mejorar mientras comparten anécdotas y aspiraciones personales. Además de las dificultades de trabajar en la calle, Daniel deberá afrontar algo peor: el abuso de poder por parte de la policía.
– Director´s Biography / Biografía del Director:
SOFÍA PRADO
Born in Bariloche, Argentina. Studied Audiovisual Arts at the National University of Arts. Started as a sound recordist for independent short-films and feature-films. “Ikè: far away” is her first project as a scriptwriter and director. It’s supported by the National Art Fund (FNA) and the National University of Arts (UNA – Buenos Aires). The script was part of the Talents Buenos Aires workshops in 2016, having been selected by the FUC, in partnership with Berlin International Festival – Berlinale Talents, the Goethe-Institut Buenos Aires and BAFICI.
Nació en Bariloche. Estudió la Licenciatura en Artes Audiovisuales en la Universidad Nacional de las Artes. Participó en cortometrajes y largometrajes independientes como sonidista. “Ikè: Irse lejos” es su primer proyecto como guionista y directora. Cuenta con el apoyo del Fondo Nacional de las Artes y de la Universidad Nacional de las Artes. El guion fue tutoriado en el Talents Buenos Aires 2016, al haber quedado seleccionado por la Universidad del Cine, en colaboración con el Festival de Cine de Berlín – Berlinale Talents, el Goethe-Institut Buenos Aires y el BAFICI.
– Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:
Over the last few years, immigration from Africa grew up until it became a part of daily life in Buenos Aires. Argentina has always valued its history of immigration but African ancestry is often denied, even while it goes back to the colonial period. This project came from my interest in immigration conflicts and the history of African people in Argentina. The dangers of traveling far away, the tough work, racism, black identity and the separation from their families are constant themes in the interviews that I carried out with workers from Ghana, Senegal and Cameroon. The daily racism that they have to endure is accompanied by violence from police officers and government officials. Only a small part of the media has published news of agents breaking violently into family homes in the middle of the night, mistreating and beating the inhabitants and confiscating their means of sustenance. From these real-life experiences, the story began to take shape and its characters came to life by the hand of amateur actors, whose lives are equally affected by these situations, following a script but also improvising and contributing with their own experiences, accomplishing, at last, a hybrid between reality and fiction.
En los últimos años, la presencia de inmigrantes provenientes de países africanos se incrementó hasta convertirse en parte del cotidiano de Buenos Aires. Argentina siempre valoró su historia de inmigrantes, pero la africana es la ascendencia ignorada, aun teniendo una larga historia que se remonta a períodos coloniales. Este proyecto parte del interés por los conflictos derivados de la inmigración, y la historia de los africanos en Argentina. El riesgo del viaje, el arduo trabajo, el racismo, la identidad negra, la familia que tuvieron que abandonar, son algunos de los temas que atravesaron las varias entrevistas que realicé a trabajadores provenientes de Ghana, Senegal y Camerún. A la violencia cotidiana de la cultura racista, se suman las historias de violencia por parte de la policía y funcionarios del gobierno. Algunos pocos medios difundieron casos de agentes irrumpiendo en viviendas familiares a mitad de la noche, a los golpes y robando su fuente de sustento. De estos casos reales se fue armando una historia, y sus personajes tomaron vida con actores no profesionales, a partir de un guion, pero también improvisando con aportes de experiencias propias, logrando una hibridación entre ficción y realidad.
