Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:

There are only 7 Kurds in Argentina. They don’t even all come from the same country. Three of them are Turkish, one Iranian, two come from Iraq, and the last one from Syria. They share the same story: when each one of them arrived in Argentina they found themselves completely alone. Nowhere to turn to. Some years ago, we started an ambitious film project, which would bring together 2 different cultures, taking us to the core of a revolution through the voice of an exile who was returning to his homeland. It didn’t happen. Changes and setbacks are part of documentary projects’ nature. We should get used to that, ideally. I still don’t feel at ease with this film which is the result of the insurmountable obstacles we had to face. This is a film made out of odds and ends; bits we had initially discarded but after listening to Natalia and Delil, they made new sense and made the film take a completely new direction. Delil´s real name is “Che”. He also has a third name: the Turkish name imposed on every Kurd individual and the one that appears on their ID card. This third name would be uttered not even once throughout the whole movie. His father named him “Che” wishing he would resemble Che Guevara. This is what they called him at home. Only at home. How is it that someone who struggled from his early childhood and whose father gave his life for a cause, justifies not returning to his homeland to fulfill his father’s expectations: fighting for the liberation of his people? The answer is hidden in what is unsaid. How is it that an Argentine woman falls in love with a revolution that is taking place on the other end of the world and with which she has no ties; how come she starts crying when she hears a Kurd mother wearing a white headscarf sing? Delil and Natalia speak in order to finally be able to stop talking and remain silent. This film is about the relationship with utopia, the value of struggle when there are so few possibilities of winning, and of solitude. It is also about feelings of disappointment for which we can’t find words. In Argentina, the other end of the world, there is something that connects them. He won’t admit he doesn’t want to go back, that now he feels indifferent to the cause. She feels exactly the opposite. Rojava was totally annihilated even before its sociopolitical project really was brought into action. Still, in that place, you can feel that there’s another way of living and a different perspective for building up society. We already know that these kinds of experiences tend to end in perpetual wars that doom any project that may question our low-intensity democracies and intolerable inequalities. Utopias seem to be bleeding slowly to death, but how is it that those who still believe in them survive? There’s a moment in the film when Delil and Natalia are talking around a fireplace in the middle of the night. They laugh together at what it is to be an activist in Argentina for a cause that nobody is interested in, the Kurd cause. Suddenly, Natalia says: did you know that my brother was kidnapped in a concentration camp not far away from here? He survived, the other one didn’t, and the other one disappeared. Delil remains silent. It was at that very moment, that I felt I started to understand them. Delil and Natalia still dream. They feel outsiders, not in terms of a country, but of their own story.
