A father and a son, isolated in a dilapidated country house, try to survive a hellish summer. Hunting during the day and spending the nights by the campfire, the son starts to sense a strange connection between his father and the nature that surrounds them. An ancient secret is about to be revealed.
Un padre y un hijo, aislados en una ruinosa casa de campo, intentan sobrevivir a un verano infernal. Entre jornadas de caza y noches de fogón, el hijo empieza a percibir una extraña conexión entre su padre y la naturaleza que los rodea. Un secreto ancestral está a punto de revelarse.
- Synopsis / Sinopsis:
Nicolás returns to Formosa to rescue Rafael, his father, who has suddenly and inexplicably abandoned his career, his home, and his friends and buried himself in a dilapidated house in the middle of the bush. Immersed in the infernal heat of the northern summer, father and son partake in survival tasks, rekindle past conflicts and rehearse possible reconciliations. As the days go by, Nicolás begins to sense a strange connection between his father and the nature that surrounds them. Little by little, Nicolás will discover that this place holds an ancient secret that could endanger their lives.
Nicolás vuelve a Formosa para rescatar a Rafael, su padre, que de manera repentina e inexplicable abandonó su carrera, su hogar y sus vínculos y se internó en una casa ruinosa en medio del monte. Inmersos en el calor infernal del verano norteño, padre e hijo comparten tareas de supervivencia, reavivan conflictos del pasado y ensayan posibles acercamientos. A medida que pasan los días, Nicolás empieza a percibir una extraña conexión entre su padre y la naturaleza que los rodea. Poco a poco Nicolás descubrirá que en ese lugar subyace un secreto ancestral que puede poner en peligro sus vidas.

SEBASTIÁN CAULIER
Sebastián Caulier was born in 1984 in Formosa, Argentina. He graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Experimentación y Realización Cinematográfica (ENERC). Scriptwriter and director of “Los extraños” (2008 – fictional short film included in the cycle “Historias Breves V”), “La inocencia de la araña” (2012 – fiction feature film), “Salvaje” (2012 – documentary medium length film), “El corral” (2017 – fiction feature film) and “The Bush” (2022 – fiction feature film).
Sebastián Caulier nació en 1984 en Formosa, Argentina. Egresado de la Escuela Nacional de Experimentación y Realización Cinematográfica (ENERC). Guionista y director de “Los extraños” (2008 – cortometraje de ficción “Historias Breves V”), “La inocencia de la araña” (2012 – largometraje de ficción), “Salvaje” (2012 – mediometraje documental), “El corral” (2017 – largometraje de ficción) y “El monte” (2022 – largometraje de ficción).

I think of ‘The Bush’ as a film that moves between three genres: drama, fantasy, and horror. I like the fusion of genres, not as a cinephile game of references but as a natural breathing process within the film. In this fluid movement of tones and atmospheres lies its identity. This film sheds a light on the scope and limits of the communication between parents and children. It is a plea for disagreement. There is no final reconciliation, no such moment in which the fog of our prejudices clears and we fully understand each other, in a transparent and lucid way, without any type of interference. The perfect communication, what an entelechy! If we accept this as valid, we must ask ourselves, is it possible to inhabit a bond even in dissent and mutual misunderstanding? Just as no one is born a father, no one is born a son. Both roles are built over time to the extent of each one’s tools and possibilities. Some do it better; some do it worse. Some do it right away, others take a little longer. In ‘The Bush’ we see two people trying, as much as they can and with what they have at hand, on the roles of how-to-be-a-father and how-to-be-a-son, in a constant tension between wanting to fulfill those roles and at the same time escaping them. Paradoxically, it is precisely this unsolvable tension that allows for a space and a possible encounter. What has always fascinated me to this day about the mythologies of northeastern Argentina, where I grew up, is that they do not require any explanation. Mythical creatures have no origin and their acts don’t follow any purpose. Things just happen and that’s it. Why should we project the logic of our rational world to the supernatural one? Even more so, can we draw such a clear border between both worlds? Or is what we call the supernatural nothing more than an infinite network of phenomena as natural as wind or rain, which we simply cannot access yet? Perhaps what the bush claims for itself is no different from what it already has and what it already is. The borders between the human, the animal, the vegetable and the mineral, between the earth and the claw that steps on it, between the river and the eye that beholds it may just be another fiction. A story we tell to calm ourselves down.
Pienso a “El monte” como una película que se mueve entre tres géneros: el drama, el fantástico y el terror. Me gusta la fusión de géneros, pero no como un juego de referencias cinéfilas sino como proceso de respiración natural de la película. En este desplazamiento continuo de tonos y atmósferas está su identidad. Esta película echa luz sobre los alcances y los límites del entendimiento entre padres e hijos. Una defensa del desacuerdo. No hay reconciliación definitiva, no existe ese momento en el que se dispersa la bruma de nuestros prejuicios y finalmente comprendemos cabalmente al otro, de manera transparente y lúcida, sin ningún tipo de interferencia. La comunicación perfecta, qué entelequia. Si aceptamos esto como válido, queda por preguntarnos: ¿es posible habitar un vínculo aún en el el disenso y la mutua incomprensión? Así como nadie nace padre, nadie nace hijo. Ambos roles se construyen en el tiempo a la medida de nuestras herramientas y posibilidades. Algunos lo hacen mejor, otros peor. Algunos lo hacen de entrada, otros demoran un poco más. En “El monte” vemos a dos personas buscando a tientas, como pueden y con lo que tienen, este cómo-ser-padre y este cómo-ser-hijo, en una tensión constante entre querer ocupar esos papeles y a la vez rehuir de ellos. Es esta tensión irresoluble, paradójicamente, lo que hace posible un espacio para el encuentro. Lo que hasta el día de hoy me fascina de las mitologías del nordeste argentino, con las que crecí, es que no necesitan explicación. Las criaturas míticas no tienen origen y sus actos no obedecen a ninguna finalidad. Las cosas simplemente acontecen y ya. ¿Por qué extrapolar al mundo sobrenatural la lógica de funcionamiento de nuestro mundo racional? Y más aún: ¿Podemos trazar una frontera tan definida entre ambos mundos? ¿O lo que llamamos sobrenatural no es más que una infinita red de fenómenos tan naturales como el viento o la lluvia a cuyo conocimiento todavía no podemos acceder? Tal vez lo que el monte reclama para sí no sea nada distinto de lo que ya tiene y de lo que ya es. Las fronteras entre lo humano, lo animal, lo vegetal y lo mineral, entre la tierra y la garra que la pisa, entre el río y el ojo que lo observa, tal vez sólo sean una ficción más. Un cuento que nos contamos para tranquilizarnos.
