A documentary portrait of the cinematographic distributor Pascual Condito and the world of the Argentine film industry. His passion for cinema and his commercial skills allowed Condito to survive different economic crisis that the country suffered. However, he insists that in these last couple of years the film business has changed profoundly and that he, like other national distributors, could disappear from the market. A reality that he shares and discusses with a lot of the other players of Argentine cinema that pass by his emblematic office. Condito, tired of the difficult moment he is going through with his distribution company, is thinking over a crucial decision that will allow him to continue safely in the world of film until the end of his days. Following Condito in his daily routine, the documentary tells his exciting story and allows an insight into the intimacy of the cinematic industry.

Su pasión por el cine y su habilidad para los negocios le permitieron a Condito sobrevivir a las diferentes crisis económicas que tuvo el país. Behind of Screen is a documentary portrait of the cinematographic distributor Pascual Condito and the world of the Argentine film industry, which it is always going through a crisis. He achieves fame as strong and temperamental man in the industry of film. However, over the years, he was able to create the attractive character of an angry guy but likable and trustworthy. His passion for cinema and his commercial skills allowed Condito to survive different economic crisis that the country suffered. However, he insists that in these last couple of years the film business has changed profoundly and that he, like other national distributors, could disappear from the market. Condito comes out to fight, tired of the hard times for his company and film industry at Argentine, trying to reverse that situation. He assumes a personal battle, according his brave and passionate character. Some people share his fight, another people is agree on what he claims, even though they don’t share his passionate way to ask. Many people think he is a Quijote, one brave gentleman fighting many battles fated to lose. A reality that he shares and discusses with a lot of the other players of Argentine cinema that passes by his emblematic office. Tras la pantalla es una película documental sobre el distribuidor cinematográfico Pascual Condito y la intimidad del mundo de la industria del cine argentino que vive atravesando constantes crisis. En el ambiente cinematográfico se ganó la fama de ser una persona de fuerte y cambiante carácter. Sin embargo, con los años, supo crear el atractivo personaje de un tipo calentón, pero querible y confiable. Su pasión por el cine y su habilidad para los negocios le permitieron sobrevivir a diferentes crisis económicas y culturales que tuvo el país. Pero en estos últimos años sostiene que el negocio del cine en Argentina ha entrado en una profunda crisis y que él, como otros distribuidores nacionales, puede desaparecer del mercado. Pascual Condito cansado del difícil momento que está atravesando su distribuidora y el cine argentino toma la decisión de salir a pelear para intentar revertir la situación. Lleva adelante una lucha bastante personal, fiel a su estilo apasionado y provocador. Varios lo acompañan, otros coinciden con sus reclamos pero no en su forma de llevarlos a la práctica y muchos lo ven con cariño como una especie de Quijote solitario que pelea por una causa noble pero casi imposible de concretar. A partir de las situaciones que atraviesa actualmente Pascual Condito se narrará y construirá su apasionante historia de vida. Desentrañando el mundo de Pascual Condito conoceremos la intimidad de la industria cinematográfica argentina.

Marcos Martinez is a filmmaker and photographer. He studied Communication Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires, Photojournalism in FOTOTEA and Film Directing at the CIEVYC. He made with Hernan Lucas a documentary video «Social» produced with images of wedding parties, baptisms and communions; «Building» made entirely with images of security cameras and «Cold House» documentary essay on Argentine cinema during the last military dictatorship. In 2007, he made the film «Stars» co-directed by Federico León. «Stars» won four awards, including the Special Jury Prize at the International Competition of BAFICI IX; the «Best Film» award at the Second Film Festival Tucumán and the «Critics Award» in the III Documentary Film Festival San Pablo.
Marcos Martínez es cineasta y fotógrafo. Estudió Ciencias de la Comunicación en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, Fotoperiodismo en FOTOTEA, y Dirección de Cine en el CIEVYC. Dirigió junto a Hernán Lucas los videos documentales “Social” producido con imágenes de fiestas de casamientos, bautismos y comuniones; “Edificio” realizado íntegramente con imágenes de cámaras de seguridad y “Cámara Fría” ensayo documental sobre el cine argentino durante la última dictadura militar. En el 2007, estrenó el largometraje “Estrellas” que co-dirigió junto a Federico León. “Estrellas” obtuvo cuatro premios, entre ellos el Premio Especial del Jurado en la Competencia Internacional del IX BAFICI; el Premio “Mejor Película” en el II Festival de Cine de Tucumán y el “Premio de la Crítica” en el III Festival de Cine Documental de San Pablo.

– Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:
Analysis and discussion on the construction process of the Argentine cinema has been strongly developed in books and magazines, roundtables festivals, websites and even on television, but rarely on the big screen. It is necessary and interesting thinking about cinema on the cinema itself. Thus addressing the major conflicts that historically through the Argentine cinema, particularly concerning to the distribution of their films. The role played by the film distributor makes is in fluid contact with the major players in the industry, therefore, usually it has a privileged overview of «the state of things.» And Pascual Condito dealer has all the condiments to be a good host to intimately explore this universe. His strong personality, his particular way of working, the film displays passion, made him an outstanding star of the industry. Often Condito life seems to be a fictional construction. It is encouraging to see how consciously or unconsciously has put together a character itself. I think I understand his personality and his way of working is a way to understand more of Argentine cinema. And further on the challenges of building a better film distribution is a good way to talk about the project and the cultural identity of a country.
El análisis y el debate sobre el proceso de construcción del cine argentino se han desarrollado fuertemente en libros y revistas, mesas redondas de festivales, sitios de Internet y hasta en programas de televisión, pero muy pocas veces en la pantalla grande. Así es que me parece atractiva y necesaria la búsqueda de reflexionar sobre el cine desde el cine. De este modo abordar los principales conflictos que atraviesa históricamente el cine argentino, en especial con respecto al de la distribución de sus películas. El rol que cumple el distribuidor cinematográfico hace que esté en contacto fluido con los principales protagonistas de la industria, por lo tanto, suele contar con un panorama privilegiado sobre “el estado de las cosas”. Y el distribuidor Pascual Condito cuenta con todos los condimentos para ser un buen anfitrión para recorrer íntimamente este universo. Su fuerte personalidad, la manera particular de trabajar, la pasión cinematográfica que despliega, lo convirtieron en un protagonista sobresaliente de la industria. Muchas veces la vida de Condito parece ser una construcción de ficción. Es estimulante observar cómo consciente o inconscientemente ha armado un personaje de sí mismo. Creo que entender su personalidad y su modo de trabajar es una manera de entender algo más del cine argentino. Y profundizar sobre los desafíos que presenta la construcción de una mejor distribución cinematográfica es una buena manera de hablar del proyecto y la identidad cultural de un país.
