Public toilets. Men. Sex. Alejandro Modarelli and Pablo Castro Videla share their stories about the meaning of the “teteras” (tea rooms or cottages) during Argentina’s military dictatorship.
Baños públicos, hombres, sexo. Alejandro Modarelli y Pablo Castro Videla comparten sus testimonios sobre lo que significaron las teteras durante la dictadura militar en Argentina.
– Synopsis / Sinopsis:
Public bathrooms, men, sex. It is known as TETERAS to those public baths where men go in search of sex. Alejandro Modarelli and Pablo Castro Videla tell how they lived during the teapot boom period in Buenos Aires during the 80s and 90s. While they recall their experiences from two particular perspectives, they tell us what this practice consisted of, how it was modified and the way they live it today.
Baños públicos, hombres, sexo. Se conoce como TETERAS a aquellos baños públicos donde acuden hombres en busca de sexo. Alejandro Modarelli y Pablo Castro Videla narran cómo vivieron la época de auge de las teteras en Buenos Aires durante los años 80 y 90. Mientras rememoran sus experiencias desde dos miradas particulares, cuentan en qué consistía esa práctica, cómo se fue modificando y la manera en que lo viven hoy.
– Long Synopsis / Sinopsis Larga:
The documentary is a journey and analysis of what the teapots were during the 80s and 90s through the memory of two men, where their testimonies complement each other to understand this practice and its social impact. Alejandro Modarelli and Pablo Castro Videla, tell us where these bathrooms were, who went there, what the codes were like, how this way of relating changed and to what extent they feel part or not of a new generation where the practice persists but the forms of interaction have completely changed. The two social actors contribute their points of view from the urban, the social, the historical, the erotic, tinged with the memories of their own experiences and everything they have seen with their own eyes.
El documental es un recorrido y análisis de lo que fueron las teteras durante los 80 y 90 a través de la memoria de dos hombres, en donde sus testimonios se complementan para comprender esta práctica y su impacto social. Alejandro Modarelli y Pablo Castro Videla, nos cuentan dónde se encontraban estos baños, quiénes acudían, cómo eran los códigos, de qué manera cambió esta forma de relacionarse y en qué medida se sienten parte o no de una nueva generación donde la práctica persiste pero las formas de interacción han cambiado completamente. Los dos actores sociales aportan sus puntos de vista desde lo urbanístico, lo social, lo histórico, lo erótico, teñidos de los recuerdos de sus propias experiencias y de todo lo que han visto con sus propios ojos.

DORA SCHOJ / NACHO DE PAOLI
Nacho De Paoli and Dora Schoj were born in 1992 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. They´re both students of Image and Sound Design at the University of Buenos Aires, where they´re making their first projects independently.
Nacho De Paoli y Dora Schoj nacieron en 1992 en Buenos Aires, Argentina. Ambos son estudiantes de la carrera de Diseño de Imagen y Sonido en la Universidad de Buenos Aires, donde realizan sus primeros proyectos de manera independiente.
– Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:
Nacho discovered the universe of «Teteras» in 2015, browsing a blog where anonymous men shared their stories. In 2017, he proposed to make a short doc on the subject as a project for the university. Dora was very enthusiastic about the idea and they started working on the project with the rest of the team. The first months of work we carried out a deep investigation into Teteras and the social context of last Argentina’s military dictatorship. For this, we contacted Alejandro Modarelli, who had written a book about it. As it was almost impossible to film the real events, we decided to work with interviews and a fictional dramatization, in which we seek to include the eroticism of the bodies, without the testimonies remaining in the background due to the explicit images. For aesthetics and cinematography, we work with references such as «Paris is Burning» by Jennie Livingston and «Los Amores Imaginarios» by Xavier Dolan. Throughout the process we seek to build an own space linked to the interviewees to empathize with them, avoiding creating a flat and decontextualized image.
Nacho descubrió el universo de las «Teteras» en el año 2015, navegando por un blog donde hombres compartían de forma anónima sus encuentros en baños públicos. Durante el 2017, junto a Dora, propusieron realizar un documental sobre el tema como trabajo para la universidad y comenzaron a trabajar la idea junto al resto del equipo. Durante los primeros meses de preproducción, realizamos una profunda investigación sobre las Teteras y el contexto histórico de la última dictadura militar en Argentina, buscando los rastros del origen de esta práctica. Para eso, nos contactamos con Alejandro Modarelli, escritor y co-autor del libro “Fiestas, baños y exilios”. Debido a la imposibilidad que lleva registrar los hechos reales, decidimos trabajar con entrevistas, material de archivo y una dramatización, donde buscamos incluir el erotismo de los cuerpos, sin que los testimonios quedasen en segundo plano por lo explícito de las imágenes. Durante todo el proceso buscamos construir un espacio propio vinculado a los entrevistados, evitando crear una imagen plana y descontextualizada. Nuestras referencias estéticas y fotográficas fueron «Paris is Burning» de Jennie Livingston y «Les amours imaginaires» de Xavier Dolan.
