The land expels and the ocean drowns, departures repeat themselves in every generation. Selva dances within voices and memories, in a game that prepares her for the inevitable separation.
La tierra expulsa y el mar ahogan, la partida se repite en cada generación. Selva baila entre voces y recuerdos, un juego que la prepara para la inevitable separación.

Writer and Director. Born in 1989, Sofía has Ar¬gentinian and Costa Rican nationality. She studied Image and Sound Design at UBA. She directed the short films The Other Side, Inside Land (38th Clermont-Ferrand) and Selva (56th Semaine de la Critique). She’s developing her debut film Ceniza Negra (Land of Ashes), scheduled for production in 2018.
Directora y guionista. Nace en 1989. Nacionalidad Argentina y Costa Rica. Diseñadora de Imagen y Sonido de la UBA. Ha dirigido los cortometrajes Al otro lado, Entre Tierra (Clermont Ferrand) y Selva (56th Semaine de la Critique). Desarrolla su opera prima Ceniza Negra (3Puertos Cine, Lobo Lab y premio CNC-FICCI 2017).
– Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:
Selva happens on an island on the Costa Rican Caribbean, a strip of land trapped between a river and the ocean. A place stuck in time, where immigration stories impregnate each bond, each space, each body. I migrated nine years ago from the country I was born. This is a way of talking about my own departure, one that resonates in my memory, like a ghost that inhabits me. But now it’s time to speak of the brave ones, the ones that stay. The story of a girl that senses her brother is leaving. Of a mother that cries the memory of her baby, of a grandfather dreaming his son comes back from the sea. The time has come for the echoes of absence to be heard throughout the entire island.
Selva transcurre en una isla del caribe de Costa Rica, un pe¬dazo de tierra atrapado entre el rio y el mar. Un lugar deteni¬do en el tiempo, donde las historias de migración impregnan cada vínculo, cada espacio, cada cuerpo. Migré hace nueve años del país donde crecí. Esta es una for¬ma de hablar de mi partida. Aquella que resuena en mi me¬moria, como un fantasma que me habita. Pero ahora es el turno de aquellos valientes que se quedan. La historia de una niña que intuye la partida de su hermano. De una madre que llora a su niño, de una abuelo que sueña que su hijo regresa del mar. Ahora es tiempo que el eco de la ausencia se escuche por toda la isla.
