Entre las cordilleras del norte neuquino una cultura sincrética resiste a desaparecer en el tiempo. La temporalidad de las cuatro estaciones patagónicas: el cotidiano de sus habitantes, sus rituales y rutinas atravesados por los cambios sociales y climáticos entre Los Andes y Los Vientos. Imágenes de resistencia y belleza, de soledad y nostalgia, de vida y muerte.
Among the mountains of Northern Neuquén, a syncretic culture struggles to not disappear. The four seasons mark the inhabitants’ pace, with their rituals and routines pierced through by diverse changes. A hypnotic experience of resistance and beauty, of solitude and nostalgia, of life and death.
– Long Synopsis / Sinopsis Larga:
Entre las Cordilleras de los Andes y de los Vientos hay una vida distintiva, con prácticas culturales únicas que resisten al paso del tiempo y los cambios sociales, conservando su singularidad. La trashumancia, los crianceros y puesteros, las cantoras de cueca original, las fiestas religiosas y la naturaleza distinguen esta región, tan diferente en cada estación del año. En la primavera los trashumantes van con sus animales hacia las altas cumbres para que se alimenten del mejor pasto, pasando noches y días con su manada para volver en el avanzado verano a su pueblo u hogar. Mientras tanto se canta la cueca en sus casas. En verano, la fiesta de San Sebastián reúne a distintas personas, locales y turistas, en una gran peregrinación de la fé, donde los habitantes de la región expresan su cultura y comparten entre sí y con los demás la idiosincrasia cotidiana de manera ritual. En otoño, la reclusión en los hogares es de tono intimista y silente. El trashumante, la cantora y los demás habitantes se resguardan en sus casas, en una calma con tonos de melancolía, con sencillez y pequeñas alegrías. De soledad, sosiego y espera. En el invierno intenso, de nieve y silencio, los animales se acurrucan para enfrentar el frío. El espacio y el tiempo se unen en una atmósfera de discreción, sigilo, como si algo oculto rondase todo, enigmática. La cantora canta para sus adentros y se escucha entre las montañas. El trashumante camina hacia un lago congelado y desaparece en la neblina. Solo se escuchan sus pasos, desapareciendo, y los tonos de una canción mezclada a los sonidos invernales. Las montañas se imponen. Silencio. Sueño.
Among the Andes and Viento Mountain Ranges, there is a distinctive life, with cultural practices that resist the passage of time and social changes, conserving their uniqueness. The transhumance, the old shepherds, the original cueca singers, the religious festivals and nature distinguish this region, so different in each season of the year. In the spring the transhumant go with their animals to the high peaks to feed on the best grass, spending nights and days with their herd to return in the late summer to their town or home. Meanwhile, the cueca is sung in their houses. In summer, the festival of San Sebastián gathers different people, locals, and tourists, in a great pilgrimage of the faith, where the inhabitants of the region express their culture and share with each other the daily idiosyncrasies in a ritual way. In the fall, incarceration in homes is intimate and silent. The transhumance, the singer and the other inhabitants take shelter in their houses, in calm with shades of melancholy, with simplicity and small joys. Of solitude, calm and wait. In the intense winter, of snow and silence, the animals huddle to face the cold. Space and time come together in an atmosphere of discretion, stealth, as if something hidden is all around, enigmatic. The migrant walks to a frozen lake and disappears into the mist. Only his footsteps are heard, disappearing, mixed with the winter sounds. The mountains are imposed. Silence. Dream. Between the Mountain Ranges is an observational documentary that tries to transport the viewer to the reality that represents, with its temporality and feelings.
– Director´s Biography / Biografía de los directores:
Pavel Tavares (28, Brasil) es documentalista. Algunas de sus obras son los cortometrajes Jasy Porã (Argentina); Alexander (Rusia); La Villa Yao (China); y el largometraje Ojo de Mar (Patagonia). Docente en Diseño de Imagen y Sonido (UBA). Seleccionado y premiado en el Talents Buenos Aires (2016), la Bienal de Arte Joven (2017), Programa de Cine de la Universidad Torcuato Di Tella y DIPRA CINAIN.
Pavel Tavares (28, Brazil) is an independent filmmaker. Some of his works are the short films Jasy Porã (Argentina); Alexander (Russia); The Last Small Village (China); and the feature film Ojo de Mar (Patagonia). Teacher at Image and Sound Design (UBA). Selected and awarded in the Talents Buenos Aires (2016), the Young Art Biennial (2017), and the Film Program of the Torcuato Di Tella University.
Benjamín Garay (27, Argentina) es director de fotografía. DOP en Jasy Pora, 26 ‘(2014) ganó dos premios como Mejor Fotografía en 21º Festival FAM (Brasil) y 24º Festival de Cine Latinoamericano Rosario (Argentina), Mejor documental en CILECT (Bélgica) y Cine Tres Fronteras (Paraguay / Brasil / Argentina ). Codirector y DOP en Ojo de Mar, 92 ‘(2018).
Seleccionado por Interaction Film Camp (Serbia), DOP en Osamdeset Dinara, cortometraje documental de Inma de Reyes (España).
Benjamín Garay (27, Argentina)Is a Cinematographer. Worked on several short films. Jasy Pora, 26’(2014) won two awards as Best Photography in 21º FAM Festival (Brasil) and 24º Latin American Film Festival Rosario (Argentina), Best documentary in CILECT (Belgium), and Cine Tres Fronteras (Paraguay/Brasil/Argentina). Also, he worked in Ojo de Mar, 92’(2018)(Among the mountain ranges), a feature film documentary which hasn’t had its premiere yet.

La interpretación del espacio y del tiempo en Ojo de Mar es parte de nuestra búsqueda artística: traducir con los elementos audiovisuales la sensación vivenciada en cada región. Los aspectos distintivos encontrados en el norte neuquino, propios para uno y muy parecidos a su cuna para el otro, nos permiten tocar los puntos que nos interesan: las culturas genuinas que resisten en el tiempo, los paisajes únicos de su continente, los contrastes y complejidad del sincretismo, la riqueza cultural de los lugares fronterizos y la calidad humana de las minorías. Buscamos llevar a quien vea y escuche la película, a un viaje hacia este territorio, envueltos de la temporalidad que emana de las cordilleras y sus habitantes y ritmos.
The interpretation of space and time in «Among the Mountain Ranges» is part of our artistic search: to translate the sensation experienced in each region with the audiovisual elements. The distinctive aspects found in the North of Neuquén, typical for one and very similar to its cradle for the other, allow us to touch the points that interest us: the genuine cultures that resist in time, the unique landscapes of the continent, the contrasts and complexity of syncretism, the cultural richness of border areas and the human quality of minorities. We seek to take who watches and listens to the film, to a trip to this territory, wrapped in the temporality that emanates from the mountain ranges and their inhabitants and rhythms.
