A history book, a film saved from the flames of a dictatorship, an exiled filmmaker, and an archive full of films downloaded from the internet. With these materials, a young filmmaker intends to rebuild an image of the women who made the longest strike in Argentina.
Un libro de historia, una película salvada de las llamas de la dictadura, un director de cine exiliado y un acervo de películas pirateadas. Una realizadora busca reconstruir con estos materiales las imágenes de las mujeres que hicieron triunfar la huelga más larga de la historia argentina.
- Synopsis / Sinopsis:
No images are preserved from the Great Tandil Strike, carried out in 1908 by the stonebreakers. There are only some testimonies left in a forgotten book and a fiction film from the seventies. A century away, we reconstruct their history using found-footage from several films, looking for the absent images of the stonebreakers into the gestures of other women. The victory of this riot wouldn’t have been possible without their actions on the frontline.
No se conservan imágenes de la Huelga Grande de Tandil, impulsada por los obreros picapedreros en 1908. Apenas hay registro de algunos testimonios en un libro olvidado y una película de ficción de los años setenta. A un siglo de distancia, reconstruimos fragmentos de su historia con películas ajenas, buscando en los gestos de otras mujeres las imágenes ausentes de las picapedreras. Sus acciones en la primera línea del combate fueron decisivas para el triunfo de la rebelión.

AZUL AIZENBERG
Azul Aizenberg (Buenos Aires, 1993) is a filmmaker who graduated from Universidad del Cine (FUC). She wrote and directed the short film “Last Land” (2016) and “Friend” (2019). Today she is editing her first feature film “Disposable Love”. “The Stonebreakers” (2021) is her third short film.
Azul Aizenberg (Buenos Aires, 1993) es realizadora cinematográfica egresada de la Universidad del Cine (FUC). Escribió y realizó los cortometrajes “La última tierra” (2016) y “Amiga” (2019). Actualmente se encuentra produciendo su opera prima “Amor Descartable”. “Las Picapedreras” (2021) es su tercer cortometraje.
- Director’s Statement / Declaraciones del Director:
Omitted or neutralized, part of the history of class struggle in Argentina remains in the shadows. The so-called “Great Strike” at Tandil is part of this omission. In cinema, those who fight for empowerment are usually caricatured, victimized or simply lose. We wonder: isn’t there a film where we win? I study Argentinian film history with this question on my mind. On this search, I discovered a film on youtube: Cerro de Leones, from 1975, months before the last military dictatorship. In this film, amateur actors play as the workers on strike, which ends up with the historic triumph for the working conditions. The film is directed by Alberto Gauna, but it is signed by a collective. I found his contact after months of research: he has been exiled in Spain since the dictatorship. He writes to me that the military entered his house illegally and set it on fire. The rushes of his film ended up in flames, taking away the only images of the women who took part in the strike. From this absent image, I imagine this film. Regaining this piece of class struggle becomes a story. In the words of Jonas Mekas, the history of cinema is an invisible history: a history of friends getting together to do what they love. And, in that case, the history of comrades that fought for the revolution.
Omitida o neutralizada, parte de la historia de la lucha de clases en Argentina permanece aún en las sombras. La “Huelga Grande” de Tandil es parte de esa omisión. En las películas, habitualmente quienes luchan por la emancipación social son caricaturizados, victimizados o pierden. Nos preguntamos junto a algunxs compañerxs: ¿no hay una película en donde ganemos? Reviso la historia del cine argentino con esta pregunta en mente. Llego así a una película en youtube: Cerro de Leones, de 1975, a meses de la última dictadura cívico militar. En ella, actores aficionados interpretan algunos sucesos de aquella huelga mítica, que acaba con el triunfo histórico de los obreros por las condiciones de trabajo. La película está dirigida por un tal Alberto Gauna, pero lleva la firma de una cooperativa. Después de meses de búsqueda doy con su contacto: está exiliado en España desde la dictadura. A través de correos me cuenta que los militares allanaron e incendiaron su casa, en donde se encontraban los descartes del montaje de esta película. Allí se encontraba también la única imagen de las mujeres que posibilitaron el triunfo de la huelga. A partir de esta imagen ausente imagino esta película. Recuperar la historia de la lucha de clases implica también recuperar la historia del cine, . En palabras de Jonas Mekas, la historia del cine es la historia invisible: la historia de amigos que se encuentran para hacer lo que aman. Y, en este caso, la historia de compañerxs que lucharon por la revolución.
